I know exactly what you mean. I was at a club night not so long ago at a very highly respected nightclub in my local city. Playing at it was a DJ who has been involved in major nightclubs in Magaluf such as boomerang etc. He’s the type of DJ who wanders around talking to all the staff during the length of the song. Don’t get me wrong, this is okay when it is only warming up (which it was), but I noticed something I don’t think anyone else did. Whilst he was talking to one of the bar staff, he suddenly realised that his song was running out. No biggie, throw in another song quickly, nobody is really going to notice, they’ll all be chatting and getting their drinks in for the night. Before he could make it up to the booth, I heard the next song coming in, perfect to the millisecond, in a very clever mix. Yet this guy was still climbing the steps to the booth. He quickly grabbed his headphones and got on like normal, and nobody knew any better. I was RAGING.

Sucks but connections mean alot in this industry. You can be the lousiet mixer but if you know how to socilize and have lots of friends that can get you far too.

Well while he may not be mixing much, he obviously does something right… he has connections, he made a name and he puts on a show. Which is called “playing to his strength”.
I know this is frustrating sometimes, but at a lot of events you can get by with only doing “simple blends” of Top40 bangers…

It’s horses for courses. There are different mixing techniques for every situation. When I do weddings etc I don’t beatmatch I do fade ins/outs and talk overs. You can’t hate a DJ for doing it his way and making a good living by it. I even play pre-recorded megamixes and mashups, I don’t hide the fact as I’ll be at the bar or in the gents. However, put me in a booth and I’ll mix away to my hearts content, I don’t need to warp tracks to help me fit them in my set, I don’t need a sync button, I don’t need to look at a passing waveform to know when the break is coming. Some do, some don’t I really don’t care. What really matters is that the floor is rocking. Habit means I’ll look and listen to what a DJ is doing and either give him/her a nod of appreciation or just walk away if there’s not a lot to the style but hate not.

If a DJ is making money he or she must have some talent, zero talent means zero bookings, and zero pay.

I have a weekly residency at a bar, if I started mixing tracks together, playing mashups and whatnot, I would be out of the door quicker than a hiccup. Also, as Si said, at weddings and parties it’s a simple fade in and out procedure, with the emphasis being on keeping the floor packed all evening, playing the hits that will keep everybody smiling and having fun. When I get home, or if I get a decent club gig, that’s when I start getting technical but that’s just me, every DJ is different.

The guy’s strengths are obviously that he knows his music and he can work a crowd, which in my opinion are any DJ in public forum’s top priority. I wouldn’t call the guy fake.

Very nice writeup Si BooGie. I totally agree that it is hard sometimes to tell what will make people care about things.
For example my gf likes vases. We have lots of them around the house with various detailed paintings and art on them. However her price piece and most valued vase is one that we bought in Japan from a really old potter. It is plain sparkling white, but it almost brought her to tears when she saw it and was handed it by the potter.

Sometimes the magic of a moment lies in simplicity. I tell that to many DJs that I see fail in clubs lately, coming with a huge array of toys, beatmatching 10 songs in 10 minutes and F/Xing, sampling and even drumming on their Maschine like mad…. they have excellent skills in what they do, but you can only stand their performance for 10 minutes, then I need a break and a beer to stop shaking nervously….

Played one of my first gigs last night on a boat party.

All the crowd wanted, and reacted too was top 40 and cheesy songs they knew. So I ended up doing fade in fade out and fairly simple mixes for music I am not a massive fan of.

It was a big learning curve for me, as going into the event with big songs and clever mixes with nice drops and breaks, I ended up being, according to this thread, a “Fake DJ”

    And it saved me

Bottom line is as technical as you can get and as great as you are as a DJ ppl come out for the music not you. When you start hitting superstar status then it will be all about you and Your music. plan accordingly.

    Fake djs « sync button

Fake DJ:ing is not about using sync buttons or A/B crossfade transitions. It’s to fake the whole thing by playing a fixed set of songs, worst case even already mixed together.

DJ:ing is about getting people to dance. If you have a fixed set, even pre-mixed, and the crowd does not get interested, you are hosed. The person above who showed flexibility to play top-40 tracks, that was a sign of a true DJ. And if you don’t like such gigs, don’t take them.

Still don’t get why people are fixated on the sync button, reminds me when vinyl DJs thought CDJs were only for fake DJs. Here we go again.

Yes. They have equipment, music and mix it for people to enjoy. Most partiers don’t know the technicalities of djing and don’t care either. They are there just to have a good time.

DJs are for getting people to dance. It’s not that the audience goes and checks you to make sure you are not using sync and leaves the place, exactly. So selecting the right tracks for the right situation is something DJs should spend more time learning. As for sync or no sync, that’s not a big deal even if some beginners think so. This of course is not applicable for bedroom DJs where I think most anti-syncs exist.

If an ipod had no dead air your average partier couldn’t care less. As long as u play the right tracks. If you have other djs or friends who can appreciate the technical side of it then great. But hott drunk bitch down on the floor don’t care. She just wants to dance.
