    Hey Branden, it sounds like you’re handling things on the floor just fine so it’s purely marketing/networking where your efforts need to be focused from here – Guerrilla Music Marketing is an excellent jump-off point on the topic, albeit with a ‘band’ focus as much of it is.  The salient points regarding promotion are all still valid.  One thing you may wish to bear in mind, seeing as all your dates have gone so well thus far, is what kind of impact a less-than-stellar evening might have on your mindset – it sucks when it happens, but it is ultimately inevitable if you keep doing this long enough, and seeing as you’re looking to expand your business, it follows that you’ll likely need to operate outside of your comfort zone (read : type of gigs you’re working).  I’ve learnt a lot more from the few bad nights I’ve had than all the good ones put together, as the expression goes : Smooth seas do not make good sailors.

    One old sales trick is to tell them you forgot your cards, but ask if they will write down THEIR email and name so you can drop THEM  a note with your contact details. That way you can contact them a while after and keep some pressure on. Asking for you card is a compliment, actually booking you is a different thing.

    Are you looking to play weddings?

    That’s the bread and butter for mobile DJs.

    Thank you all for your replies.

    @D-Jam

    I would love to do a wedding, but I haven’t done one, yet. Perhaps I should shadow somebody at one of their wedding gigs before I do my own?

    It’s always useful to tag along with an old hand and watch him/her at his trade. Be aware to not fall into the trap of interpretating skill and experience as it being an “easy” thing to do. If someone makes it look easy, it’s just because they got real good at it. Rather than think “oh, it’s easy, I can do that (too)”, focus on determining what it is that he/she is good at that makes it look so easy.

    Good luck and keep us posted.

    Thank you all for your posts, you’re all super helpful.

    So I designed new business cards, and I have slanged out tons of them since my new arrival at the big university.

    My friends also all agreed to slang out cards for me, so hopefully that will come soon.
