The way I first started was usually through friends. I’d ask one of my EDM fanatic friends for something like *insert random song name here* and they would send it over. I come from a heavy metal background, I had no idea for EDM. After a while I’d just go on YouTube, search up a song I like and then listen to the suggestions on the right… Find an artist I like, search more for him/ her and so on. Now I also just randomly try stuff on Beatport and listen to any mix with a tracklist.

I find mixcloud helpful…. especially since most mixes there have track lists, DJ charts can be ok but careful since a lot like to promote themselves or their label there… online radio… always a source and the stations often have a website that posts the tracklists…
It really ends up at committing time to finding music and listening to some stuff outside your comfort zone. I never was a big breaks fan but thoroughly enjoy them now that I have more of a feel for them. Doesn’t mean I will ever be convinced to like dubstep, but it is about listening to stuff you may normally not and then seeing what of that you like and can incorporate in with your style 🙂

That’s funny you mention that because I also was 100% into metal before EDM. I’ve met a lot of people like that actually, and you’ll always see t-shirts of metal bands at raves and festivals. It’s funny that that happens because you wouldn’t think the genres are similar. I guess it’s something subliminal :).

Haha so I’m not the only one! That’s awesome, cheers man. I get such weird looks when I tell people. It’s definately left an impression on the EDM I like now, no happy fluffly music for me!

Well i guess ill input my 2 cents here regarding finding new music.

As the EDM scene is blowing up there is a stupid amount of garbage EDM thats out there.

My tips for finding new music:

1 – First off you need to have a few artists that you like a lot. Go onto beatport and find which label they are under and look up artists under the same label. Usually Each label has producers that have the same style of music under it.

2 – Once you have those artists that you like…look up who does remixes of their songs…usually the remixer sometimes not as often as #1 will have music in the same genre.

3 – http://www.last.fm is a great site for finding new artists…best thing to do is type in an artist and there will be a page that shows artists that are Highly similar to not very similar to the artist you are viewing.

4 – Blog Sites…there are tons of great blog sites that always post new music. http://www.mymusicisbetterthanyours.com is one that i use very often and always has good music, in a variety of Genres.

5 – Expand your musical Horizions! Start listening to people that you may not necessarily like…sometimes not very often they will produce a song thats just BANGING in the genre that you like. A great example of this is Hirshee…Hirshee used to be a lot of Dubstep and Drumstep but has been producing BANGING electro Tracks.

6 – Soundcloud, Add all your favorite producers…there are often a ton of bootlegs and re-rubs that are release for free on soundcloud for download and often not a lot of these are ever played out in a club.

Funny thing about the Metal background, since I had a huge metal phase when I was around 16/17, even played in a Progressive Metal band for some time.

I always thought that EDM tracks (especially the more in-your-face style Electro House tracks) have a similar song structure like straight Metal songs, for example a lot of Electro (House) songs (and Dubstep as well) use their bass synths as the main thing to carry the melody of a track, or better they’re used to create something in the song similar to riffs in Metal – no huge variations in notes with the main focus lying on the rhythm. Maybe that’s why people who like Metal also tend to like “aggressive” EDM music : )

I hope it’s somewhat understandable what I tried to say here ; )
    Any comments on this?

Edit: If you don’t know it yet, check out this blog: http://www.metalectro-music.com

Probably right the distorted bass riffs at electro house sounds really familier to heavy metal

Also the lack of the typical “intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus” structure. It’s still there in some metal and edm songs, but most of the metal and edm I listen to and love tends to depart from that structure. That blog looks great, I’ll give it a listen when I’m off work. I can’t remember the name of the channel, but there’s a guy on youtube that posts trance remixes of metal songs as well.
