Definitely guilty of this. In production as well as DJing. I’ll sit down with something in mind, and totally get sidetracked. What I need to start doing is recording everything from the minute I open the program haha.
Trouble is my best inspiration usually comes when I’m just listening to music for fun. I’ll think “By god this would mix perfectly with this other song!” but I almost always forget it. I’ve taken to typing text messages to myself when I’m out and about and something comes to me haha. Even then it’s hard to recall exactly what I had in mind in the moment of inspiration.

Of course it doesn’t matter! 🙂 However, book yourself a gig and you’ll suddenly find your focus changes quite drastically.

I set myself goals constantly… but my best sounding stuff comes from just playing around and having a ton of fun. The trouble with that is that you can only learn so much. Like last night once I have set up all my cue points and stuff I found myself lost in how to mix in something other then House. That takes practice though. Mixing EMD together is kinda simple since all the beats are very similar. Once you get into the harder stuff with more vocals or genres you will need to focus and over come that frustration that is called the learning process.
