ParticipantIt happens all the time, specially to me.And to be honest every time it happens i don’t bother trying to convince them.I just make a point of noting that the mixtape was suppose to show some of my skill and my own personality as a DJ and not my music collection, which usualy is enough to make them feel like morons for assuming. After that i just say Assumption is the mother of all ef ups.Other then pointing that out and then noting my favorite line i make no real attempts to convince people of stuff.

KeymasterHappens all the time. People who do not understand the purpose of mixtapes are very frequent, key is not to get all emotional about it and defensive. Be professional, take their feedback for what it is and move on.

ParticipantHow I see it if your mixtape would have been a mix of just popular hits then it wouldn’t have been a real showcase of your skills as a DJ. So sounds more like bad judgment on their end…..the sad effects of commercialism(main stream music).

ParticipantIf i’m to be honest though i find mixtapes these days to be less of a measure of the DJs actual skills and more of a showcase of the DJs personality.Specially since a lot of stuff these days is done on PC it doesn’t seem too hard for someone to really make a perfect mixtape to spite the fact that they have no real skill at using CDJs or even a midi controller.

ParticipantI agree with Black Rag.. still, a person that has spent the time in learning how to mix properly will utilize the software better.. I think. And Hope! Its like a chef, right. You never make complicated dishes unless you can master the basics.
To go back to the issue, I let my mixtapes reflect what I would be playing, pretty much no matter what. I have gotten offers to play at parties, but they wanted a certain style of music. I thanked them, but turned the gigs down. They have to look for a different DJ. I play my style of music, thats it! I do this for the music I love, so I don’t really compromise on that…

that’s a good attitude to have if you aren’t going to make a living from being a DJ,but there’s also the point of that a lot of us actually live from being what we are.And i do agree on the fact that knowledgable people do utilize the program more efficiently, thing is,does knowing how to utilize the program for a mixtape also mean you will know how to use the gear to do a live performance, sometimes it does, others it does not.

ParticipantIn that case, going back to the mixtape issue, the person in question should then have mixtapes reflecting anything and everything he/she would be willing to play!
For me, I think if you start compromising on the style you play, your identity as a DJ might get watered down or confused… I mean, say someone sees you at a party playing the music that you love and the crowd really connects! Then you get a different gig, but the people throwing the party wants you to play Top 40 hits, or whatever.
There could be a situation where people would want to go, in order to see you play! But then you play all this other music and the connection is lost forever!
I think you know where I am going with this. I understand that as a person living off from being a DJ it is tempting to take all paying gigs that you can. But in my world at least, I would rather stay true to the style/music, hopefully get a small following, keep getting gigs and get paid that way. It is more difficult, but at least you are clear about who you are, the music you play, and people will not get confused.
I should add that I don’t listen to a broad range of music myself… Well, I actually do, but I like particular artists and bands, not genres. hard to explain. I’m very particular, lets just say, so there is a lot of stuff I could never make myself listen to, let alone play 😀

ParticipantI totally get this but who says you got to stick to exactly what they want, after all You are the DJ.They hired you to give them a good party not just to blow smoke up their posterior exhaust port.

ParticipantAsk if you could give her a small live performance of what she is trying to hear, maybe just you and the people hosting the event. If you say you’re willing to play what they ask at the party, but its not your personal preference, show her that you have the ability to perform how they want, live and in person. This way, it directly showcases your ability, without watering down your online mixtape collection with something you don’t consider your personal “style”. She might also impressed at seeing you do it live, which could clear some of the doubts she has, as well show her your willingness to work and maybe lead to more events from this person or persons
