ParticipantUnless I’m at home or a house jam I’ll never get drunk while spinning. The most I’ll allow myself is to be a bit tipsy but no more. When it comes to being baked and spinning, I’ve pretty much never had an issue with that no matter how much.

MemberI was DJing a house party i was at. The house was owned by a really good friend of mine. Supposed to be a huge event (there were two DJ’s taking shifts) but nobody really ended up showing up. So me and my DJ friend drank and DJ’ed (ya its unprofessional, but when there is no one there, who cares right?) Its was pretty fun, swear to god I’m a better mixer drunk (but I was also drunk, so I really have no idea). Obviously, if there were tons of people there I wouldn’t have gotten drunk, but it was almost a practice sessions with nobody being there and all

MemberUnfortunately I learned to DJ drunk the hard way. I was DJing my girlfriends birthday party and being in party mode I wanted to celebrate with her as well. So I had made a potent concoction of random booze in our liquor cabinet of Vodka, Rum, Gin, Blue Curacao, and some sour mix. It was actually VERY tasty. I put all of this into a large pickle jar.
So apparently I was the only on drinking this god awful drink and drank well over half of the jar. I ended up on the ground vomiting my damn guts out! It was terrible. The only thing I remember was her standing over me asking if she should call an ambulance. I was trying to say yes but nothing would come out. Worst night drinking EVER!
Good news is it was a small party and by the time this happened it was just close friends left and no one held it against me since the night had moved into more of a chill mode. Since I’ve shown my girlfriend the basics in Traktor she was able to put it on one of my chill lists and put it onto auto play. They just kind of let me sleep on the floor of the deck for a while lol
DON’T DRINK AND DJ!
A little herbal stimulation never hurts… but just a little before hand to calm the nerves. Its not professional to do either of these in the workplace.October 16, 2012 at 9:50 am #1013723Dalton Black
ParticipantMy third gig was a complete failure (bad beatmatching, timing completely off, and I stopped my decks) because I got drunk off of the free drinks. I will never do it again, that’s for sure. I’m still very embarrassed about it and can’t wait to go back to redeem myself.

MemberI’m usually drinking and smoking the whole night, unless it’s a wedding or something like that. Of course there have been times when it got in the way of good mixing. Nonetheless, I’ve also played my best sets while high and tipsy. In my opinion, it’s a matter of not going too far.

Participantused to drink alot while DJ during a period but after one time when I fell over the deck and my laptop went flying out on the dancefloor I’ve never DJ’ed drunk again. I now sometimes 2-3 beers at the end of the night then I can drink a few more while I wait to get payed. It also depends on where I play. When I play othere towns or events where I bring my lights I need to be able to drive after the show so no alcahole what so ever.

ParticipantI haven’t ever played out sober. I find the nerves get me too much if I’ve not had a drink at all. If I am playing somewhere where they are paying me well and I want to get asked back though I will only have a couple and make sure I’ve had enough to take the edge off the nerves but not enough to impair my judgement at all. Works for me.

ParticipantI cannot DJ sober for the life of me…I have no problems mixing for fun and trying new stuff out sober…but for shows i have to be a bit drunk as Prude said…my nerves also get the better of me and i need to have a few drinks…but usually after the first Big banging drop im all good to go 😀

ParticipantI drink a few beers, no strong alcohol… it gets you tired on the long run and after 2 hours of working you’re unable to sustain the concentration.
I must give in, though, it makes you more daring and sometimes makes you drop that crazy song that you wouldn’t have dropped otherwise, and gets you the crowd favor 🙂

MemberI do have to have a bit of lager in me to help me get into the groove. I had a bad experience thought at my second ever show where I started completely sober and was completely ripped off the free drinks 6 tracks later. Not good. I barely made it through that set, I literally got down out of the booth and hurled everywhere on the floor, and it still stands as the worst gig I’ve ever played. Now I have a strict 1 pint per hour limit- enough to have a nice buzz going, but not so much I can’t play properly.

ParticipantI stay away from draft beer. Usually, I can go six bottles of Bud Light. Also, I wouldn’t recommend hard liquor. One night as I played Daft Punk, I kept using swear words about current dubstep artists. Not a pretty sight.
