If you are talking monitor speakers and the budget is for a pair, I’d look at something like the M-Audio AV42s for example. They are ok for the money.
KRK RP5 G3 would be a much better choice, but those will be about 100 pounds each.
In speakers, you get what you pay for and 100 pounds really is very little money for a pair of speakers and if that is per speaker you can get some of the more budget models, with the KRKs a strong contender for first in it’s class.
The M-Audio’s are the same price as the Mackie, but 4″ instead of 3″. Both won’t provide you with a lot of bass (not in volume, punch or low frequency), but the 4″ will be a bit better at it then the 3″.
The 360s are also 3″. All discussed speakers are active (or rather semi-) with an amp in one speaker that powers both speakers (as opposed to the KRKs for example which have an amp in every speaker).
I’d set my monitors on stands which might help reduce the footprint some.
