ParticipantHey Max,
What you are missing here is the RANE 57 mixer is a mixer with the Serato SL-1 sound card built into it. The Numark X5 mixer you would still need to buy a sound card like a Serato SL-2 or Native Instruments Audio-6 to connect between the turntables and the mixer. And just because a mixer is DIGITAL or has USB does not mean you can use Serato Scratch Live or Traktor Pro Scratch with it. Do some research into mixers and/or sound cards designed to work with the software you are going to use. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road.September 13, 2012 at 4:06 am #1012107synthet1c
MemberIt’s like comparing a rolls royce to a toyota. Sure toyota “numark” have some good cars in their lineup (the x5 is one of them) but it’s not a prestigious brand as most of what they release is pretty poor. “Rolls Royce” (RANE 56-57) on the other hand is heavy, bulky and plain, but the performance and quality is astounding in comparison to a toyota. They will both do the same job although the RANE will probably sound better (having never heard the X5) and certainly costs more.

KeymasterIf you have your whole library in Itch at the moment (using the NS7) I would strongly suggest getting a Rane mixer and go with scratch live. It is an awesome system and the built quality is outstanding. Would I ever go back to DVS, that would be my choice.
Also go Technics. There are no turntables like Technics. Sounds cheesy but I love them, take great care and time when selecting your slipmats and needles… they are actually more important than the turntable itself.September 14, 2012 at 8:06 am #1012147Maxwell Rogers
ParticipantThanks guys for the advice. I was aware of the Rane 57. I guess the only thing that turned me off about it is the fact that I can’t take my mixer everywhere which would eventually lead to me needing a second SL1 to take to gigs that I couldnt bring my mixer to. Should I even worry about or is is defintely worth it just go with the 57. Terry, I understand what you’re saying about the Technics. I would love to get a pair but they are really expensive and they don’t offer some of the bells and whistles that Stantons offer i.e. Key Lock option and more DD torque for scratching. In your opinion, is it still worth it for the Technics even though they don’t have those features. Besides the name, what am I really gaining from by MK5s vs a cheaper brand that offers more in terms of specs. The fact is, I will be spending a lot of money. Sure my gigs will pay for it but I only want to go down this road once as far as big purchases go. I don’t want to be looking for new equipment within the next 2-3 years.
Thanks guys.

KeymasterWell I have not used the Stanton turbtables in their current offerings. Also I do not use DVS since I guess 2 or 3 years, so my experience might be slightly dated.
But I always felt that it was about feeling. (Cool sentence huh?)
The technics have a specific feel to them, I get exactly the traction I need with the slipmats I used etc.
Also if you have clubs that have turntables, they will have Technics, so you know your way around them.
And last but not least: I had several other turntables die on me, but I never ever had a Technics fail on me that was kept in good condition.
However turntables are a very subjective thing. I see many DJs perform with other turntables and do extremely well (DJ Flip and Angelo use Reloops I guess and both are extremely good scratchers with Flip being ITF world champ.)So if the stantons do float your boat, then by all means go for them. I would however hugely recommend to try before buy or get them via a internet dealer that has money back thingie.

KeymasterI think the Stanton STR8-150s are excellent, as good as Technics. And if I were you, I’d buy a simple mixer (Xone:32 or even 22) and an SL1 for the reasons you suggest (why not use the club mixer?), and also consider some kind of controller for some of SSL’s Midi functions. Dicers would be good, but in that case you’re swinging back to Technics purely because they have nice indents for the Dicers to tuck into!

ParticipantThanks for the advice Phil. I was actually looking at the STR8-150s this weekend. I think since I’m dropping so much money on this I might as well make sure I won’t be buying anything else any time soon. I plan on going with MK2s or the MK5s with the Dicers of course. I’m still on the fence about the mixer though, but I’m thinking I will just go with the 57SL.
On another note:
Phil, I will be in Barcelona in the next xouple weeks and I’m not sure where you are located but I would like to come check you out. If not, where’s some nice lounges to hear some good music. I’m not looking too large just a good atmosphere.
