I have 2 very strong opinions on DVS:

    1. If you do it, you need to do it right
    2. If you do it, you need at least to be able to do the same than on your mixtrack pro (or other average controller)

So if your heart is set on DVS no matter where you use it the minimal configuration I would recommend is:
    – Rane SL2
    – Allen&Heath Xone:23 or 23C
    – Reloop RP8000 turntables
    * Alternative Turntable: Vestax PDX-3000 Mk II with Novation Dicers x2

    The Perfect Setup:
    – Rane Sixty Four Mixer
    – Reloop RP8000 turntables

Also if you are on a tight budget DVS will never be something for you. If you use your turntables often you will require at least 30-50 bucks per month in additional gear, servicing the turntables, needles, timecode vinyls (which do get broken) and so on. Where this calculation is modest. When I was still using DVS heavily I was easily in 100-200 bucks per month or more.

If you buy a 20 bucks turntable from ebay expect nothing more that it might eventually play the timecode but manipulation of the platters will be crappy at best.

    1) These were what i was kind of planning on with an SL2 and a numark mixer borrowed until i could get a better one, supposedly the older gemini’s are based on 1210’s in design but to a lower level of quality obviously.
    2) i would say yes i can on the mixtrack and im more than happy with it and will probably stick with it for house parties etc, i just fancy trying dvs at home but would want to do so with minimal outlay as a student working only saturdays.

Would it be wiser to go down the timecode cdj route? maybe numark ndx 400 because of the usb input?

Timecode CDJ is the worst thing you can do. IMHO it is totally not worth it.

I would say if you are a student low on cash, stay away from DVS for the time being and go with controllers.
Once you finished your studies and have enough income to have expensive (really expensive) hobbies then revisit your desire and if it is still there, then go for it. Else you will probably but much money (on your scale) into something that will eventually have a rather depressing outcome.
