I’m confused, are they just simply mashups?  I have no problems with people playing mashups from record pools, in fact every DJ I know uses them.  A lot of DJ’s even make them themselves, some even established themselves solely as mashup artist’s (see kap slap and 3lau).

However, if it were indeed premixed transitions, yeah id call that pretty shitty and not worthy of an established dj.

I actually just helped a guy out with a gig that did something similar. He’s been in the game for a very long time and has a really good reputation. I was surprised to find out that he played a lot of very long premixed mixes. He made them himself though and they were like hour long CD’s worth. Was it cheating? Initially i felt that way but after some thought i would say no. If you have enough experience to know what a crowd would like and be able to use the mixes effectively then go ahead. I prefer the flexibility of individual tracks.

Personally I doubt you can ever achieve THAT kind of “feeling” for what the crowd once (and the broader kind of DJ you are the harder it gets).  I have played 6 day/week residencies for 4-5 months on end at one location. Yet every night would be different.

If you make a mix especially for that night and then trash it, maybe, just maybe that could be ok (as a backup for when you need to pee). If you plan on using the same mix more than once … not good.

And finally, but this is entirely my personal opinion, the entire point to DJ-ing is to create a mood on the night. And I can’t see how you’d do that from the safety of your couch in the week leading up to a gig.

I once went to a new years dance in a small town. The DJ was supposedly the “best in town”. He was playing nothing but nonstop Stars on 45 type megamixes from iTunes on his laptop. Occasionally he’d drop in an unmixed Top 40 track or country song in between (this was Western Canada). I found it laughable.

But the crowd was eating it up, so who am I to say anything?
