I generally wait until the bugs have been worked out of brand new software…

For example, I wont be upgrading to Win 10 straight away (I’m on 8.1 at the minute) but I will wait a couple of months…

Same when it comes to new software – although with new updates for older software I update straight away… 🙂

I’m still on Windows 7….not crazy about monkeying with software that works fine!

I’m not talking OS. Believe me, I usually never update Windows until the first Service Pack is released.

I’m talking about not updating your Serato or Traktor software for YEARS.

My colleague is using Serato from 2012, and is afraid to update. Seen stories like this elsewhere too. Just seems a bit…paranoid.

When people release updates to software, it’s generally LESS buggy and/or has MORE features..

So I literally have no clue why you wouldn’t update..

If a new version of a software was released (i.e Virtual DJ 9 for examples sake), I would wait a couple months before getting it, so that bugs would be worked out. However, when there are updates to VDJ 8, I always update then and there (unless I need the software immediately as I occasionally do on the dozen or so occasions I have performed..) anyway, yea, update on small stuff almost always, big stuff, I wait on.

Why are people slow / resistant to updates? Well, consider this little saying…

“If builders built houses the way programmers build programs, the first woodpecker to come along would destroy civilization.”

Upgrading is an issue full of TONS of annoyed groans and very, VERY few pleasant surprises. I use a relatively outdated laptop (Inspiron running Vista Home Edition), so updates are a very real problem. Along from vista itself updating whatever the hell it needs to every 3-4 days, Adobe Flash player, iTunes, Java, and a bunch of other programs are CONSTANTLY coming out with updates that don’t have any improvement at all in their speed or ease of use. But this is coming from my experience, so I might be missing the point of these updates due to the way I use my software.

The biggest annoyances by far are Adobe Flash and iTunes. Every few weeks I need to install the new Flash Player because I’m using an “unsupported version.” Same with iTunes. I haven’t changed the way I use iTunes since their logo was still green, so EVERY SINGLE update has been TOTALLY unnecessary for me. In fact, every single “Blue” version of iTunes has run worse on my laptop than any of the green versions. The only pleasant surprise I’ve had recently was the newest “Red” version of iTunes, which runs much faster than the Blue version, but still slower than the green version.

I also use MixedInKey, which suggests an update every single time I open it. And when I tried to update, I found out that I would have to pay for it AND that it wasn’t supported by my operating system.

Don’t think that because someone doesn’t want to update their software that they’re just “stuck in the past.” A later version does not necessarily mean a better version, and it’s often the case that it’s inferior and not fitting to a person’s workflow.

Guy – I would suggest that you disable the “check for updates” function on pretty much every piece of software on your PC.

(USe C-Cleaner for this – launch it, go to Options -> Startup and pretty much disable everything that isn’t made by intel, microsoft etc.)

I would also change the rules in Vista for updating to “Download updates but let me choose when to update” – stops the annoying updating thing..

It is important to keep all your software up-to-date though – try simply uninstalling anything you don’t want/need?

Also – Whilst I would agree that “later does not necessarily mean better”, I would say that small updates to programs do nearly always improve them – so whilst you may not want to go to the brand new version that’s just been released (EG VDJ 7 to VDJ 8), updating from 7.3.4 to 7.3.5 will probably make the software better..

I don’t like updating Traktor once get a version of it working properly. I’m on 2.6.8 and refuse to budge from that given the reported buggyness of the updates since then and also the fact that my mixer won’t work from 2.8 onwards.
I gig every weekend, and have a full time job, so the last thing I want is to upgrade and then still be fighting to get it working an hour before my gig starts.
