ModeratorI see where you are going with this. Most DMX solutions DO require you to “tinker and learn”. It’s the nature of the (DMX) beast, so to speak.
That said, if you were to use Serato to build your mix (even if it’s just one 2-hour long track as I assume Serato can handle that, though I never tried), you could have a look at SoundSwitch. It would totally cut out the need for a manual DMX controller. Everything can set in the software, linked to your mix and synced to the beat (as you want).

ParticipantThanks for the input, Vintage. And yeah, I assume “tinker & learn” into my curve. I’m not assuming there’s some “magic box” solution I can just plug into the wall that will run a pro light show for me (the 1990’s light tech in me bristles at the thought ;). Unfortunately, I’m a VDJ registered user, and can’t stand Serato. I have a suspicion I’m headed down the Chauvet ShowXpress path, because I at least know they offer a timeline-based show builder. I’m a little wary of the CPU overhead required to (effectively) play one massive .MP4 or .MPG a/v file out to projector/house, then at some point mid-show, have the whole thing glitch, crash, and wreck. I HOPE having an external box dealing with the majority of the DMX work will alleviate that.
Cheers,

Participant…although you’ve given me something to think about! I’d not seen the SoundSwitch. It does do what I always wanted: encode DMX right into the track so when mixing live, you get the same consistent DMX “look”. That may be an option…

ModeratorFrankly, you could still build your mix in VDJ and export it as a single track to Serato I would think. Then add the light instructions, hit play and you are off to the races 🙂

ParticipantDJ Dominic, I am just starting the DMX lighting “thing” and am using Virtual DJ Pro… with FreeStyler and a USB to DMX software controller. You can build your lighting and shows under FreeStyler, then…
. VDJ has a plugin effect that allows that allows FreeStyler to drive from the software – https://www.virtualdj.com/plugins/index.html?category=effects&search=freestyler8 . It loads as an effect under the master section. Maybe, this will make that USB dongle more useful!I am still in hobby mode, and only have a RGB light bar and strobe that I have set up. Nothing anywhere close to what you are doing.
DJ Vintage… You are a wealth of knowledge!

ParticipantThanks, Maverick. I’m familiar with the plug-in. Once you move beyond a few simple lights and cans, you, like me, may find it buggy and unstable. I can’t afford to risk running a show with it in its current iteration.
To give people some idea, this is about 1/5th of my light rig, and ONE laser.

ParticipantBTW, everything here is simply running sound – active, save the laser on/off, but when running, it’s S.A. as well.

ParticipantVintage, I agree. Either one long three-hour monster, or 6-or-so more CPU-reasonable smalls at friendly cross-over points.

Participant…or I could get off my backside and commit to learning Serato. I know the effects are more robust than in VDJ, although arguably so for a jock like me. I’d likely under-utilize them…
…at first 😉 I do have a Switch controller in my voiceover studio that I use for various tasks in Logic.

ParticipantUPDATE:
Well, it looks like I’m going to have to make the switch to Serato from VDJ. This was inevitable, I suppose, as my game grows. SoundSwitch put it over the top. It seems to answer my exact need, minus having to switch DAW’s. I’m interested in other people’s (early adopters) experience with SoundSwitch as time goes on. I’ll try and update this thread as developments warrant to help others out of the same situation.
Cheers, people…
