    Very good writeup.

I think it largely depends on your setting.
If I DJ a wedding I am not taking risks. I play what I know will work or what they want to hear and can go a full evening with only doing basic blend DJing and moderating the event.
Nearly the same goes for my “chillout” sessions on sundays or “after business” chills. I play deep house, italo house or balearic then (some latino or raggea might catch in) but keep it basically smooth and do not juggle much.

If I play a club or party/rave event, then I go all out and take major risks. I know I can recover if I clean the dancefloor, so I have no trouble doing fun stuff.

The thing however is, all of the above are not easy things to do. Just because you take more risks and do more complicated mixing techniques does not mean it is actually harder (when you mastered the technique itself). It is just different things you watch out for.

    Good write up….

I agree with terry that there are different kinds of risks, in general though i do agree with you that djing has become more of a spectacle, as the scene has begun to generate more capital the core of what İT was about in the first place gets a bit lost. For example im no scratch dj, i love hip hop but i dont scratch, my style is eclectic playing everything from funk to techno for me taking a risk is playing something unexpected, or plain crazy who knows, but that too is not easy to do, ive had extra bookings just from playing one crazy track in the middle of a set for example or ive lost bookings for the same reason. DJing at weddings is also not easy because you have to excercise patience, control etc, so risk is relevant to the context, but YES i totally agree with you that as DJing becomes more and more popular then showmanship and spectacle come to the fore rather than skill risk and of course the music itself.

I saw this the other day. Great write up. Definitely one for the oldschool crowd.
