Sometimes we forget that while it’s nice to think it’s all about the music, we offer a service to businesses. As such, while talent matters, marketing and promotion matter too (see note below). If you are new and trying to break in, a gimmick combined with a good set will certainly help make you memorable and re-bookable. You can play the best set in the world, but if you are an antisocial prick and refuse to talk to staff and guests they’ll take the guy with less talent and a funny hat first every time.

Ya, those things are hot. I’ve done a few shifts as a mascot and thought I was going to die.

*side note: I don’t mean marketing and promoting events, I mean marketing and promoting yourself to the people who making booking decisions and the guests who influence them.

I personally love gimmicks. I don’t love masks, because a mask doesn’t really “theme-ize” your performance, and enhancing your “theme” will give you a remembrance and recognition that has a longer life. My advise is to find a girl to help you pick, not a costume per se, but something more “in the direction” of a costume. Be an artist, not just a dj.

After deadmau5, it would seem a bit to try hard, no?

We are artists/performers. No mather how good the set are if you’re a grey “Ivan Boring” lookin’ down on your gear all the time. No one is going to remember you. It was just “good music at that club”.
Wearing a mask is extreem but it works for some. Personaly i love “Dj’s from Mars” 😉
My trick to be seen is to put a cool lighteffect or laserburst on the floor behind me together with a small hazer.
They only see me in siluette but it looks cool and they will notice everything I do.

I’ve been personally considering on whether or not to wear the mask in my avatar if/when I do gigs.

I suppose it all depends on the particular gig one would do; certain times can allow and even enhance a performance, depending on the music being played. It’d also give you a distinguishable look and feel, if you are the type of DJ that would play multiple genres, so long as your overall performance is good, I don’t think it’d matter too much. Let your music speak for you, not your attire.

Thanks to whomever mentioned the hydration comment, this mask does get quite hot and irritating, even just wearing it to take a few webcam pics with gets to me from time to time, lol.

Yes, your music is the most important thing, but there is a lot of good dj’s out there and you have to do something to get ahead of the others.
