    Track selection, programming, reading the crowd, build up and release, all very important skills to have. And I agree that having a DJ that can’t beatmatch to save his life but IS capable of cutting/dropping the right tracks all night is likely to be more succesful than the scratching, beatmatching, FX-king DJ that has no regards for the crowd and just plays his pre-conceived set of the “wrong” tracks.

    And it’s this selection skill that hasn’t changed, even though everything else about DJ-ing has changed.

    Indeed, if you know cool stuff like scratching, cool transitions etc. it will give you an edge if you are else on the same level with other DJs.
    However the most important things:
    Passion for music, crowd reading and entertaining people -> resulting in tracks you play and mix, are the absolute best thing a good DJ has and always puts first.
    For example I like mixing in key, but when I feel that this totally out of tune track has to come next… well then it has to.
