imo i would still keep it upbeat…but background music…lounge…deep house, soul house, latin, light tech house…stuff that doesnt have too much of tension and release music.

I agree with Hee. I DJ often in a bar where people drink and chill and nobody dances, but I get compliments often and I see a lot of feet tapping or people shuffling in their seats… you are there to provide the mood and background for them having fun and light conversation.

I DJ’ed at a coffeeshop and it was fun. The whole event was chill and so was the music. I really wasn’t expecting anybody to dance, but it was nice to get head nods, foot taps and smiles. I did it weekly and it was a good motivator, too.

What I really liked about it was the community aspect of DJing: I enjoyed sharing music with people and got into interesting conversations about music and life with people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. It was also fun to get known around the neighborhood as “the DJ.”

I used to spend much of my time DJing for art openings at galleries where I live, and you did exactly what I would have done- set the mood, keep it sophisticated.

My feeling is that most people aren’t listening to every song that’s being played, only the vibe that you’re constructing with each track. If you get a few people talking to you because of it, hand out a few business cards for more upbeat gigs later, and relax!
