Tough one. I would make short playlists of 10-20 songs of different genre and energy/tempo then line them up according to the crowds reaction. If you can find the time, you could even record the short playlists/sets so you can show some of your skills. if you have the pro version of VDJ it shouldnt be a problem and the software can split the tracks everytime you use the crossfader if you want it to. then you can jump behind the mixtrack for five ten minutes and impress them? make sure your laptop and controller are out of reach of curious people. it’s still not an ideal situation but if you dj yourself, you won’t enjoy your own party.best would be to hire a dj especially if it’s an important birthday. are you sure none of your friends know anyone? im pretty sure the venue manager will know of someone who can possibly do it on a budget.

Thanks Red_eye1980. I like your idea of short playlists as it’s impossible to know what genres the crowd will react to the most positively. At least if I have a varied amount of playlists then I can just quickly select another one that I think will best suit the mood. It’s certainly not the ideal situation I’ve put myself in so I’m going to keep trying to see if there is anybody out there who can maybe assist on the night. Thanks again for your input.

Make playlists as suggested. I also like to make mini-mixes in these types of situations. 30-40min mixes that I pre-record at home. I have these as my go to’s if my equipment screws up/need a smoke break/want to enjoy a friends party for a bit without people touching my stuff. Not “ideal” as you can’t change the song selection on the fly but since I mix house/electro, it works for me.

Pre record mixes and make them 30 to 40 minute intervals (That’s if you have time to do it). Then make those mixes your playlist.

Seems like you trying to do both things at the same time,
Maybe the venue you having your bday party at, had some kind of packages deal the venue+ DJ packages ?
DO like any these guys suggested make a mix tapes 30 mins , 1 hour or whatever, and If you want to impressed your guests more you can go behind the decks and spin like 5-6 songs and then back to your mixtape and back to mingle to your guests again,
No sure why you really insist wants to DJ in your own bday party anyway ?

I’ve done this more than once, and it worked out very well. I used two strategies = (1) Music = created many small playlists by genre, tempo and energy, etc.; (2) HardwareSoftware = I used Spotify Premium on my iPhone paired up with an Apple Express wi-fi device hooked to an amp.

This allowed me to dance, entertain, drink, eat and spin songs throughout the night. In fact, everyone was impressed by how well this set up worked. I even got gigs from doing this well, lol.
