Play the music you love, mix in some of the tunes they want to hear and most of all HAVE FUN (and look like you’re having fun – many people forget this), and you’ll be just fine.

What I’d suggest is using some top40 remixes in the style of your choosing (I’ll use Steve Aoki / Afrojack remixes to warm the mainstream crowd up to my style) then progress from there. Fedde Le Grand’s Paradise remix is another song I find myself throwing into sets a good bit, as well as some oldies (video killed the radio star electro house remix, such fun). I’d start the set by finding common ground with your audience, then roll with the sound/style you’ve established and have been looking to play.

Glad I could help. I have very few original top40s in my playlist, but have never had a problem rocking a top40 night with the aforementioned strategy.

Yeah, now that i think about it Zedd and Wolgang Gartner have a few remixes that i like So i’ll definitely be using those.

I know exactly how you feel man, and I have yet to DJ at a school event but I feel like tracks like Zedd’s Stache or Wolfgang Gartner’s Menage A Trois could go over well because they are such massive bangers. But to be safe I would mostly stick to the remix/top 40 approach.

I’m the same as you man, I find if you play a few mainstream songs in-between EDM songs you like and remixes of Mainstream songs you should keep them happy, just remember they like to sing along and know the words so don’t just pound them with songs they don’t know otherwise they will loose interest. Unfortunately with a crowd like that you sometimes have to play music you don’t enjoy as much as they do, but as Neitsky said find remixes of mainstream songs in the style of music you like, that way, the crowd enjoy themselves and you do as well!

Something I like to do is if you are playing a song you like, but they dont, and there are limited words they can sing along to, find an acapella, or just some bare vocals from a top 40 track and tease them with it. Anything they recognising will keep their attention, even if it is a few “Yeahs” from Rihanna. Then be nice and maybe play that song next
