what do you mean by dj’ing? scratching or beat mixing? if its beat mixing then it doesn’t really work as live music played by people changes tempo throughout and its really hard to keep in time with if dj’ing (mixing)

Not quite the same thing, but I’ve had live bands play off me… Some of the more interesting bands I work with will play off the last song of my set – so I fade out, and they just continue the song for a minute or so and then cut back to whatever they were planning to play.

I’ve also worked with drummers, who set up in a corner of a dance floor and play along to the mix.

But I’ve never been part of a band – does look like it would be fun though…

I’ve seen this done before, as I used to be in a DJ and play live analog synths in one band, and I used to be a guitarist/bassist/vocalist in another. I used Ableton Live more than anything when I was in the first band to play stems that the band started songs with, rather than really “DJing” with other programs such as Serato or Traktor. I’d occasionally throw in a scratch track and apply effects as needed to keep each set with the band interesting as well.

It’s completely different than playing solo at a club, as you’re not the only person providing the music, the other members of the band are as well. In my experience, the drummer and the DJ in the band provide the backbone by setting the tempo of each song. The most important thing you have to be careful about the most whilst performing in a band is rehearsing with others to ensure your timing is 100% down.

I personally miss playing with other people, as I left the one band due to personal tastes, and the other because of a desire to pursue a personal career.

I’ve DJed with drummers too, and a trombonist! (Andy Cato, now rather famous as half of Groove Armada)

Thanks guys. Yeah, the question came after I told a friend I was learning to DJ. He brought up some bands from our noth school days, like Incubus, and how they factored into the bands sound. Of done right it seems like a good DJ with the right digital gear could probably open up a lot possibilities musically for a band. Anyway thought it was interesting, especially since you don’t see many bands that use them after the “fad” died out on the early 2000’s

theres a band here called sound society that has a dj in their arsenal. From what I can tell, he scratches mostly and it really adds on.

one of the best nights in my life was london electricity in new york city. they actually had a separate room and the dj was mixing in “onto” them…the hallway between the two rooms was intense

I had a friend who would play deep house and have a band play with him. He’d have a drummer, bass, sax, guitar etc. It was more like they were playing along to him instead of the other way around.
