Article on Name Drops, including a section on “when”: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/02/dj-drops-guide/

I personally think they’re fine on uploaded mixes, online show mixes, radio mixes, anything that isn’t a live setting. When it’s a club, bar, fest, or rave…it just seems cheesy/inappropriate. Somewhat narcissistic.

    That’s just my opinion though.

Whereas when you are a mobile DJ it is way less of a problem to use them. It’s a one-time crowd and you need to get your name out right?

I do use them. I got good ones made by professionals. Recommend. 🙂

I would wager, that if used sparingly, say during the first bit of your set, and as part of some sort of routine including a little bit of performance, they’d be OK. That is the only way I’d use them live. Not that I’ve played a club though. I could see how that wouldn’t fit mixing the kinds of music you’re talking about though. If you can figure out how to fit it into the beginning of your set, and not be over the top, I’d go for it. Just my .02……. thanks D-Jam for the linky…. I think I came across that once before. Keep shining peeps……

It’s really a bit of a no-no in clubs. The things is you either are a featured act (i.e. you are on the posters for that night) or you are not (opener-closer-filler). So either people already know who you are or there is a reason they don’t want you advertising yourself.

If you are really dead-set on using shout-outs/name drops and such, be sure to check with the venue manager beforehand. They might even have a policy on it.

Or be way more cheaper to do it your self, few tweaked here and there and with the help of one of those text to speech voice thingie like this one :

I disagree Rizki, if you DO use name drops, get them as professional as you can.

I agree with Vintage. Getting a raw voice recording is quite inexpensive. From there, dress it up on your own.

A related question – what about remixes that have namedrops in them? That feels a little lame to play to me, but some of them are really good remixes. Is it even lamer to edit the drops out?

Yeah, but they are some REALLY awesome remixes. *sigh*

But, yeah, they feel pretty lame.

I think it depends on the remix. If it’s some subtle thing like Rhythm Masters sliding it in, I leave it. When it’s some blatant thing by some amateur with a good remix, I don’t even play it.

The two that come to mind for me are both top producers in the genre I work in, but they don’t seem very subtle to me.
