Zigs,
Good question
It’s funny cos i never had a mentor. I listened to other DJs, radio stations, watched DJs at clubs and parties and read alot.
I had alot of DJ friends but i never told them i was going into DJaying cos i had the feeling that they would sneer and try to protect their corner and also maybe disuade me.
I loved music already so learning the basic structure of a song wasn’t too difficult. I practised for hours , days and months, beat matching and the rest. It came as quite a revelation when people around me finally got to know that i was into Djaying. I always liked the look of dismay on their faces when they found out it was true and that i could actually mix.
I tend to learn better that way. I call it ‘Observant Learning’. Nevertheless, if you can find a mentor, it’s probably a good thing as i understand most DJs learnt this way. As you say, they would also be able to show you the social side of Djaying as well as the technical stuff.
Happy learning….
