Single dad, audio engineer, DJ and full-time employee. I usually have 2 gigs a week. I eat super healthy, stay hydrated with water, keep the booze to a minimum (or even abstain) on my “ironman days,” where it’s two consecutive days of day job and gig at night. I pick at least one off-night a week to go to bed early.

Take care of your body, because it’s the only one you’ve got. There will be other gigs to book. Learn how to say “no” to commitments that do not offer value in exchange for your efforts. Schedule time for rest and relaxation. It’s OK to not be a “type A personality.” You do not need to be productive every waking second. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is slow down or rest.

sounds like some real good advice. THANKS !

Eating healthy is one thing i seriously need to change, along with saying no to certain things, but how often do you feel like cooking, or eating a pre-prepared salad at half four in the morning. the glistening light off the kebab shop always seems to draw me in HA

Although there is easy access to Booze when Djing, it isn’t too bad as i dont drink when i play, maybe one… but then its just water after that.

“Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is slow down or rest”…. so they keep telling us 😉

keep up the hard work guys !

Here’s a tip. Cook in advance. Make something you can easily heat (pan or microwave).

The biggest way people tend to abuse their body is sleep deprivation. There is a little flexibility our bodies can accept if we short it a few hours but the sleep debt still needs to be paid. In the mean time the interest of fatigue takes its toll on everything we do.

One of my weekly lighting gigs on Wednesdays doesn’t get me out of the bar until 2 AM and I have school the next day at 7:30AM, I usually only get 4 hours or less on those nights. I try to catch naps in the van before I setup for the gig and short 20 min naps before I tear down at the end of the night.

As for food, you should make it as easy as possible to eat healthier alternatives. Keep some fruit and vegetable sticks in your refrigerator, most people are shorting themselves on fiber. Remember, healthy food are not magic pills that make the effects of an excess of less healthy foods go away. Healthy foods provide the nutrients that you’re probably not getting enough of and when eaten INSTEAD of unhealthy foods let you eliminate excess calories which cause weight gain, excess sugar which causes tooth decay, and saturated fats and cholesterol from your diet that contribute to heart disease. In short, it isn’t a plus/minus system where healthy foods cancel out unhealthy foods, all food adds up towards ranges where you shouldn’t exceed or fall short and unhealthy food tends to lead to excesses in some areas and shortages in others.

As a full time employee, i limit myself to only gigs on the weekend (friday & saturday) only, unless there is that ONE gig I cant simply refused it fell on the weekdays, I take it

As when the gigs itself, I’m not really into alcohol much,
Protips: I can put this for my advantages, on my budget proposals, I don’t demand for an alcohol bottle for my DJ compliment, thus giving me more competitive edge DJ fee’s compared to other DJ’s who demands a JD/Martell bottle as a DJ compliment

The only time i did consumed one, is when a VIP guest offered me a drink, I drank it out of respect, other times i just kept a bottle of waters stocked

Also take one of those vitamin C supplemental capsule, one every morning, and another one just before your gigs

Sleep A LOT when you can.
    Eat healthy and organic food.
    Drink loads of water.
Find tricks to stay away from too much alcohol (for example I have a bottle of Tequila that is actually light apple juice the same color as the tequila …)
