Very true, I remember the time handling crates and setting up the PA… but also learning stuff, for DJing or for live.
However todays youngsters, many of them are different and that is what makes me angry sometimes. Just because they can buy a controller they think they are “da duuude”. Had that situation in a club where I now regulary guest DJ 2-3 times a month. They respect my schedule and are fine and respect that I can push the crowd. So when a young DJ auditioned for a spot, they asked me also to be at the audition as a consultant. Now the youngster was nice, but clearly not ready for this club, so even before asking me what I thought about him, the owner said “buddy you have talent, but you are not ready yet. If Terry agrees you can work with him, so you learn the kinks and when you are ready you have a spot.”
The young boy freaked, said something about me being a motherf*** old fart and how he is the king at all his friends house parties etc. and left with a nice f+++ you on his lips. We were all stunned…. sadly this is an extreme example, but many kids think like that. This kind of behaviour is not productive for mentoring, as I kinda am not really leaning towards taking a padawan now hehe.
