Rather than figuring out which headphones will be louder, I would focus on finding a pair of headphones with good isolation.

This is where sounds from outside are blocked out so that you can’t hear them, meaning that the headphone volume doesn’t need to be as loud for you to be able to hear the music coming from them.

Simply turning up your headphones is very dangerous for your ears – you will damage them over time and many DJ’s have tinnitus in one or both of their ears due to having the volume too high. You should really be wearing ear plugs whilst DJing to protect your ears..

I suspect that the reason you are struggling is 1) Those numark headphones are frankly just rubbish and 2) Studio headphones are not designed to block out the sound from outside – they are more focused on an even frequency response than blocking out external sound. As there doesn’t tend to be much external sound in a studio..

I would look at a decent pair of DJ headphones. I use Audio-Technica ATH-M40x headphones, which I really like – but there are lots of alternatives.

There have been a few threads recently on this, so try using the search function in the forums for other ideas 🙂

Figure out your maximum budget and go from there. As bob points out, ignore studio cans and get DJ ones. They will only really go as loud as your headphone amp on the mixtrack will let them anyway, so quality of sound and isolation are the main factors. Besides, too loud = knackered ears.

This is now the part where I tell you to get the Sennheiser HD25’s.

As a very low budget cheapskate, the gang here recommended the Sennheiser 201s – really cheap, but surprisingly good sound and isolation for a bit of $25 cheap kit.

Yep, you know how we always say here that in PA and sound “you get what you pay for”, VERY occasionally there is an exception to the rule. As far as sound goes, the 201s are it. Where they fail is build quality. They’ll still last you a whhile depending on how you handle them, but it’s good advice to have a spare pair handy. At 20 bucks a pop, two of them are still cheaper than the next best thing (by far).

AIAIAI who have now gone totally modular (wonder where they took that idea from? 😉 ) used to have a model with everything fixed. It had the same sound as the more expensive TMA-1, but without detachable cord and such and it was priced very reasonably. I got one with a year subscription to DJ Mag here and have been toting it around as my spare set. Sometimes used in travel.
