I voted group, me and my friend have just started a DJ duo ( soundcloud.com/alteramigos )
I find having a friend by your side is much more enjoyable and you vibe of each other which creates a better and more enjoyable set.

Both can be good. However having founded 2 successful groups myself (one lasted 8 years) there are times of trouble and really hard times ahead if you go that way.
Creativity can be a thing. Many times peoples tastes develop differently and hence you can get into arguments which way to go.
Then there is fame, sometimes one of your group will get more attention or simply be “the better DJ”. This can lead to envy and greed.
And then there are countless other things…

I voted group but I am on the line for both. When it comes to live DJing, a group could be fun to get over the nervousness of playing in front of a huge crowd for the first time, but TBH you won’t be really DJ’ing if you have more than 2 members in teh group. Anymore would just be pressing play and dancing around (like swedish house mafia not meaning to bash but its the first thing to come in mind). But if you are bringing something new to the table like how the group “Birdie Nam Nam” Spins with 4 guys all on vinyl thats impressive.

Solo all the way. I’ve always felt solo music contains more emotional content, as it is more personal. Similar to how stories are written about war, but it’s usually centric around a protagonist and allows you to connect more.

While orchestral/symphonic music is beautiful and full of emotional content, nothing gets me like a solo violinist/pianist.

This is a fun fact: You made this thread and yesterday I was phoned up by a member of a DJ group I founded, asking me if I would play a anniversary gig with them, as they want me on board being one of the founders… hehe

I went with solo mostly because throughout life I’ve always done things on my own and I prefer complete control over my own career. However as a side project I’d love to do a duo or collaborate on creating tracks.

Yes Same Here J-Zed. I Went solo all this time. The one time I did do a Duo its was horrible. We shared equipment and conflict on what gigs we should do..etc.. I just stayed solo now for 22 years now. However, I do collabrate in making tracks with other Djs. That is the extent of it.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. My idea with it was to do both, I intend on making an image for myself as a solo Producer/DJ, but I feel like we could bring something really innovative to the table as a group as well. Like one of us using a standard controller/mixer, the other using a Launchpad or Maschine for live remixing (on top of what the controllerist is spinning), and a third person doing lighting effects in synch with the music.

In my opinion, what I found most important in pursuing my passion is surrounding myself with people who believe in what I do and give me the support that I need to keep pushing forward. Without them I don’t know where I’d be. So I found it helpful to team up and collaborate with other people who share the same beliefs, so that we can all work together to become successful.
