I think most DJs are geeks at heart.

Paul Van Dyk: โ€œWhen I started, DJs werenโ€™t in the media, electronic music wasnโ€™t in the sales charts, and a DJ was the freak in the corner who provided the music while other people had fun.โ€

You don’t have to be, but it certainly helps. ๐Ÿ™‚

The topic title should read “dj == geek”.

Does that answer your question? ๐Ÿ˜‰

On a serious note; not required, but comes on handy!

To put the time in to practise when your friends are out and about getting laid etc implies a certain geekiness ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah Phil , but being a geek or a cool guy for that matter isn’t required to become a DJ .

Yeah I definitely think DJs are geeks, if you’re not a nerd when you start DJing, you most certainly will become one

I don’t feel you need to be a geek in the negative sense at all. I’m in the Navy, date beautiful women, and yet I’m passionate. You’ll find if you throw yourself into any profession you become a “geek” of sorts. You start sweating the details, pouring over the latest tools to make you sharper at your job, focusing almost myopically on subjects most people care little about.
Like you said, youre paid to have fun playing songs you love with the crowd. But those other 6 days of the week, you’re on forums like this reading about a subject that bores most people. Thats what I feel brings out the positive side of being a geek.

So your deeper question might be, “I dont see myself as a geek, do I need to change to be good?”
Bro, youre talking about how you want a time-coded vinyl setup. That would blow most peoples minds. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Instead of looking at the word ‘geek’ as that guy in high school that nobody like. Reframe the meaning to be ‘the guy who likes technology more than the average bear.’
You can still be a charming lady killer while being ‘the guy who likes technology more than the average bear’, right?
