Hey Chris! So I see you’re going through a terrible time. Why don’t you give it a last try ? Like spend a month in the studio and create your masterpiece then go and spam all the labels you know would like your stuff. Giving up is a terrible idea cuz you have gone this far you know ? Maybe your music is shit or maybe it’s great what feedback do you usually have? Send me your stuff and I can tell you honestly what i think
    Good luck budy

    Hi Chris –

I ‘feel your pain’ & frustration, Man!

I began DJ’ing around ’79/’80 at a youth club (I’m considerably older than you, I guessâ˜ș). I then went mobile until the mid-’80s, at which point I felt pressured to ‘get a real job’, so spent the next 25 years with my nose to the grindstone in jobs I hated, with no DJ’ing on the side for pleasure?. Forward to 2011 & I was made redundant. So I thought why not try making money from my lifetime passion – DJ’ing? I don’t have kids/family but own my home & currently survive on benefits. It’s not ‘taken off’ yet, but I am giving it ‘my best shot’. So, if you are content with your current lifestyle, my advice would be ‘go all out for it’ – you only have one life.
One last thing I will add – which I don’t usually mention as I think it is generally irrelevant in most scenarios – is, I am severely mobility-impaired so rely heavily on others for the lifting & carrying part of being a mobile DJ, but that ain’t gonna stop me doing the thing I love more than anything else in this life (except the people around me), & that’s being a DJ.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

Nostalgia- thanks for the perspective and it’s great to here that you came back to it.
Just to add- i think it’s more the production i love and not the DJ’ing per se (i know it links in to each other) I kind of see the bar DJing as a way for me to earn some money on the side to free my week up a bit to work on production. (That was the original plan anyway)

    Masta- Thanks for the reply!

Yeah it’s definitely worth another shot (or 3 or 4)
Here’s a link to some stuff i’ve done

Top one was for a remix comp that i didn’t win but it got shortlisted atleast and the motivation from that got me onto the next track (this was about a month ago)

Feedback is mostly good but it’s almost like i have a hard time believing it

Im sorry but I have to drop my two cents in here,

You currently at the age of 31, living with your parents, and with no money ? And you expecting to hit it Big Time? but when is it ? when you hit 40’s still living with your parents and still with no money ?

I hate to drop the balls here man, but its time to face the REAL music, go out there and get a job that actually CAN brings you a REAL money !

There are three things I can see that could be holding you back. I don’t know you so you’ll have to judge for yourself.

First are you good enough? It’s a tough field and there are a lot of immensely talented people who never make it, if you’re not outstanding it just makes the wall even higher.

Second is an artistic temperament holding you back? Some DJs and bands I know will only play what they like and won’t change their image or presentation at all, like it or lump it. That’s fine as a hobby but unless what you’re selling coincidentally matches up with what the public wants its difficult to be successful.

Third, are you promoting and working as hard as you can? It’s not just about being a DJ/producer you need to be an entrepreneur. You need to promote, you need to sell, you need to network, you need to market yourself, you need to improve your product and you have to be willing to compromise your artistic integrity sometimes for business reasons. If you’re looking for commercial or financial success you may have base you priorities purely on that. I tell my photographer friends to forget about selling artistic prints, if they want to pay the bills they need to take pictures of cars for car dealership ads and houses for real estate companies.

A job you can tolerate, and some steady income would also be a self-esteem boost. Be smart with your money and you can move out of your parents’ house (another self-esteem killer). Without children, and good time management skills, you will still have time to produce music and dj.
