If you want portable consider a Faderfox controller with an Audio 2 sound card or even a splitter cable for the ultimate in minimalism!

Yes definitely minimal! Mixtrack Pro too big. I won’t be performing live with this setup. It’s simply for use to record my mixes on the go – and I mean like in a plane, train, hotel room desk etc with my 13inch MBP. If Ive read your current article on the subject correctly, the splitter cables means I can do away with an external soundcard right? Does the software still record the master out in stereo before it splits the audio into 2 mono channels?

If you want really portable but still with the usual controls then how about something like this?

Great – thanks Lew 🙂 that controller looks like exactly what I’m after and fro what I’m reading it’s compatible with most of the software available.

You’ll still need a sound card if you want to play in clubs/bars.

I suggest the Audio 2 from Native Instruments.

Thanks D-Jam. I’m thinking a USB sound card at the moment as I need this setup to be very portable and mainly for recording DJ mixes – but I’ll be looking to upgrade from there once I get my head around everything.

Ugh, don’t split the signal. Your mixes will sound dreadful. Better to get a cheap USB card with four channels.

Don’t know what your budget is, but here’s my suggestion, Traktor Pro with an Audio 2 sound card and a Kontrol X1. There’s no mixer in this setup, however, if you’re playing out, this setup will work well with any club mixer.

You could probably remap the X1 to be a mixer as well… or there might een be a TSI floating around.
