You can’t just answer this question by asking people. Perception is not the same as fact. Perception is a really bad thing in general to base conclusions on in the first place. If you want to know wether creativity and performance are lower these days you should set standards for performance and creativity and judge past and present dj’s on the standards.

    I filled out your questionnaire.

I think there is the same ratio of “creative” to “going through the motions” as there was before digital came into the booth. In my book, the controllerists and live performers are the new generation of turntablists. Those who seek to do more than just play music.

It really comes down to the DJ and what environment he/she plays in. I’m thankful at how mashup culture has allowed more mainstream DJs to get creative, rather than be trapped in a “shut up, stop thinking, and play the hits” realm.

    Done.

    I agree with D-Jam.
On the thing “what makes a good DJ” I think the most important answers are left out:
    – Passion for Music
    – Reading the crowd
In my 20+ years those are the most valuable assets for my performance, not if I can pull of a transformer scratch on my controller (though I can hehe).
