    Erm… For What task?

    Also, I might suggest you read up on the definition of a Digital Audio Workstation.

    A few examples (In no particular order..):

    Pro Tools
    Logic Pro
    Reason
    Reaper
    Cubase
    Ableton
    FL Studio

    You’re on about a sound card, or more accurately an external sound interface. A DAW is the program you do the production with.

    And yes, you will need one with either some decent headphones or monitor speakers to make your tunes with.

    The Focusrite 2i2 is a very popular, entry-level audio interface:

    There’re many options above this level.

    If you are just producing, consider the Focusrite Solo as well.. The same audio chip, but fewer Mic inputs.. Could be ideal for what you need?

    I personally use a Focusrite 2i4 for DJing (and some recording) and love it – it does everything I need it to and it sounds great..
