KeymasterIf you want to scratch with Traktor then the S4 is the only one which will give you low latency -> hence better scratching.
However I find the jogwheels too small for me to scratch with.
Most hip hop DJs prefer Serato Itch/Scratch Live/DJ for scratching. As you can go with controllers like the Terminal Mix, VCI-380, NS6,… which all have excellent jogwheels, but work with Serato and not so well with Traktor.December 10, 2012 at 1:31 pm #33345DJ Soulphinger
ParticipantTerry is right about getting the S4 for scartching. I Do have a Denon MC-6000 and also mix Soulful house and R&B…Lounge, Acid Jazz, Some Hip Hop, Space pop..etc.. But i have found that Denon is a versitile Midi Controller and Full stand alone mixer with Booth outputs and Filter Knobs …tec.. ;). I’ve got mine brand new for $675 . The jogwheels are ok for Scatching but if you really are in that, S4 like terry said will help in that reguard.

MemberAfter owning and trying quite a few controllers in a relatively short timespan I had to decide between the S2 (which I had owned before) and the S4. Since I mostly use 2 decks and I like the smaller size (and the cheaper price 😀 ) I went with the S2. Although I’d like to have dedicated bigger filter knobs like on the S4, I use a mapping that has filters mapped to the gain encoders and I reduced the sensitivity a bit in the mapping so they’re actually usable. Takes some getting used to I guess. Also would love to have 8 hotcues on the hardware, but I will try to map a 2nd layer (HC 5-8) using “Loop In” or “Loop Out” as kind of a shift control.
Now I know the situation with the need to free up a deck, but it’s manageable even on the S2. Drop one of the Track Decks into a Sample deck slot. Sometimes you have to use the mouse to, say, apply an FX unit on your given Remix Deck or to apply a filter… Maybe next year I’ll upgrade with a F1. Still cheaper to combine S2 and F1 than to get the S4.
I find the NI controllers’ integration with Traktor hard to beat. I’m sure the Denon is great, but I personally would go for S2/S4 all day long.

ParticipantReally appreciate the feedback guys. I love DJing house music, but I have only been really familiar with it since 2010 (went to my first rave). I’d prefer to be a House DJ all the way, but Hip-Hop is what I am knowledgeable in since that I have only heard my whole life growing up. Hip-Hop DJs here in Japan are like….a revival of late 80s-early 90’s Hip-Hop (back when Hip-Hop meant DJs, Breaking, MCing, and Graffiti) and being African American…they sort of expect me to be a ‘senpai’ or ‘leader’ of sorts in the genre.
So basically, they expect me to play Hip-Hop and will hire me for those gigs rather than playing only House music. (If you have been to Japan, you will understand haha). I still have some House gigs from time to time and my goal is to play at Club Womb (in the top 50 clubs in the world) and they for sure play House.
As long as it scratches better than a Mixtrack and can decently backspin while controlling Traktor well (and not break bank!), then it should be fine.
If you guys have any other suggestions on controllers that fit my needs, then please let me know what’s good!

KeymasterBackspin?
The only controller that can do a decent backspin with Traktor is the Numark 4Trak and that is expensive. Other controllers including the S4 have to few weight in the platters.Best controllers for backspinning currently in my opinion is the Terminal Mix 2 and 4, but the scratch latency with Traktor is really bad and I have not found a Traktor mapping I really like with it. So I use it with Serato or VDJ.
Also decent for scratching (but also with Serato) are the VCI-380 and the NS6. Both perform really well and have a good backspin if you set the jog resistance right.December 11, 2012 at 1:43 pm #33453Eddiemc°C
MemberSorry to intrude 🙂
How is mixing with 4trak compared it with Denon MC-6000. Or even with his brother NS6?December 11, 2012 at 2:01 pm #33456Terry_42
KeymasterWell the 4Trak is basically an NS6 for Traktor. So it is quite similar in every respect.
The 4Trak is much larger and has more room than the MC-6000 and hence is less portable, but has more space to get around and feels less cramped. -
