Well, iTunes 11 does not have the dup finding feature now. Anyway, if you remove entries, the play lists are updated and the entries in such iTunes playlists are removed. If you imported such playlists into VDJ, Traktor and so on, they don’t know about such changes unless you re-import iTunes playlists back into the environment.

Anyway, what I do with Traktor is to open the iTunes library and use the playlists and smart playlists, exactly to avoid this issue.

Not quite sure I understand you answer Kent. You say that the iTunes playlists are updated – which I took to mean that any references are matched to the remaining single version – but then you say that the iTunes playlist entries are removed? Have you actually done this and seen the results or are you just taking an educated guess?

I really would like to hear from someone who has done the process with either iTunes 10.x or TuneUp to discover what happens please before I take the plunge.

iTunes updates its playlists. Traktor et rest after importing an iTunes playlist as its own playlist knows zero about iTunes playlist changes.

As I said, open up the iTunes library and its playlists directly from VDJ/Traktor and you won’t see such issues. I don’t know VDJ but Traktor has ways to find out if tracks are gone/missing and this way you could also consolidate existing Traktor playlists.

I used beaTunes to help with deduping a lot of music (after doing it manually).

I know I read that iTunes removed the “Display Duplicates” function in version 11, but digging around in the software led me to see the new “Show Duplicates” and “Show Exact Duplicates” feature under the View menu. Is this not the same thing?
