KeymasterActually if you are using Serato DJ you get what Kuvo does for free.
All you have to do is sign up for Serato’s website enter your serial number and set Serato DJ to transmit track information to the Serato Server. Then you can publish all your tracks on your personal info page at Serato, which in turn can be displayed nicely in many clubs (biggest club here does it simply on monitors in the club).
No real rocket science behind it.

ParticipantMan the SZ is pretty cool, I don’t even really want a DJM and CDJs any more…LOL Hopefully my SR,(think I’m pretty much settled on that one) will earn me enough to get one some day…LOL It is a little large, but if you need small you can always have something small for those occasions too, probably what you had before the SZ would work, if not, and you can afford the SZ, you can afford an MC2000 or small modular NI stuff to have as well…

ParticipantTerry, I wasnt aware of Serato DJ doing that, thanks, will have to look into that as I will be upgrading to that soon (from ssl) and I am much more in favour of sticking to Serato.
Santa Creek, As much as I do like the SZ, its well out of my budget, its good to dream though lol

ParticipantGavin, I wasn’t at all meaning to run out and buy an SZ…. that thing is going to be an aspirational piece to a bunch of us….. I am actually really torn right now between the DDJ-SR and the new Reloop TM8….. the more I look into the Reloop the more I’m thinking I should make myself wait for it. I didn’t get the impression from your first post that you were looking to buy the SZ, just that you had gotten to try it out…

ParticipantYea I totally know what you mean. On realistic terms I also like the SR, much better size (and price). I need to modernize my set up so may end up with this. I havent looked too much beyond Pioneer as I have been used to them for so many years, maybe I need to lift the blinkers and see what other options are out there

ModeratorWhat everybody seems to forget when comparing the SZ to all the other DDJ controllers. This is aimed at true CDJ guys that need/want to make the jump to digital. Those guys look at the “normal” sized jogs on controllers and they go: too small, toys!
Now the SZ on the other hand … that’s just 2 CDJ-2000’s, which we know and love. I can work with that!
Trust me that Pioneer is not interested in all the bedroom or even mobile DJ. They want this in clubs!
So price is not really an issue. Actually the fact that it’s (a lot) more expensive than other controllers is probably part of the Pioneer sales pitch. After all, mr. venue owner, this is not a toy, this is a piece of professional DJ gear!

ParticipantFor sure, and the SR and SX and even possibly the XDL-R1 could get a lot of the mobile and home DJ market. I see the SZ as like what I would print a pic of and tape to my DJ practice console or wall, just like I would with a DJM CDJ Nexus setup pic… IF I wanted that…LOL the SZ I could go for, Z2 and TTs, good small format CDJs with hot cues and slip, etc. and a mixer, like the Z2 but Pioneer 2+2 Serato mixer, those I could see, but the Club Level/Style 900Nexus and 2000Nexux setups and similar, with their size, price, features, etc…. I don’t think I would buy it if I won a lotto…. Lots of PA to run my whatever into, and truss and lights, enough for a full on concert… yeah, not a DJM/CDJ setup…. although I might be picking up a pair of CDJ800Mk2, for so cheap it’s basically free, literally, the homie offered to give them to the cause (example of DJ community)… I’ll be making a thread soon with my DDJ-SR vs ??? help question…. thanks to all on DDJT, hope you don’t mind the books…..errrr….. posts… Moonshadow

ParticipantFirst saw the DDJ SZ fell in love with it and was madly in love with it for a week or 2. Now my feelings have settled a bit I still like to get it. But thinking about it my DDJ SX in it’s flight is having problems fitting some booths I play in. A CDJ+DJM 850 is just a little more then DDJ SZ they are HID with Cross have Send/return and the color FX + building FX about the same size oooo and I can get them in white, I just love white. Would need some way to trigger my Locators (Hotcues) though.
this is as Vintage is saying mostly amid for the CDj DJ’s that want to go digital

ParticipantI’ve uploaded other comparison pictures but not the 850 setup

Going from the DDJ SX up I personally lean more for the Pioneer 850 it is only 5 cm wider and 4 KG heavier then the DDJ SZ

ParticipantI still would like to see how close it relates to DJM-900 and the Nexus 2000. I feel like there is no way that it can be of the same build quality. They say same platter but same internals?? It looks cool but I do not see this as being a standard. Everyone seems excited for this but I feel like there are no real reviews and people already are ordering this thing. I think they should just take the Nexus remove the cd drive and add the pads to the bottom. “Bobs your uncle”

ModeratorThat might be next … DDJ2050Nexus 🙂
I am wondering what internals you are referring too. It’s cheaper (from a design standpoint) to re-use existing components (like the innards of a CDJ-2000, it’s platter and (part of) the electronics), than it is to go out and redesign everything (especially for the hardware bit).
So, I am pretty confident they re-used the CDJ-2000 stuff on the SZ. By the way, have you ever looked inside a CDJ-2000? It’s not rocket science, nor is it medical grade metal work in there. It reminded me more of old tapedecks and turntables on the inside than of high tech fine mechanics:-).
I am sure if a club just bought a DJM900/CDJ2000 kit in nexus version, they are not gonna buy one of these, not even as an addition. The money is spent and the kit has to live for another 10 years. Which is ok, cause you can make that setup work excellently with a laptop with DJ software by hooking up a few USB cables to your laptop. And if you miss the performance pads, you can always hook up some extra pad box.
Now, imagine a club that has some aging 1000’s (or even less) and a mixer (any Pioneer mixer really). It’s time to upgrade. First they see DJs come in lately who say they won’t play on the old gear and bring their own controller/laptop combo which they slap on top of the old gear. Maybe the resident DJ has talked about his controller/laptop combo he uses at home. What do you do? Spend a fortune on a nexus setup, or do you swap out the mixer for an SZ (at only a slightly higher price than a DJM900NXS) and hook up your 1000s to it. Now everybody that used the old stuff can still do that (all the features are still there, CD’s, mixer) if they prefer. Those that want to go digital now have some awesome controllers (I’ve used 2000NXSs as controller on many an occasion and they are great for that) with a great midi mixer.
Especially in smaller venues I can see this appearing as a viable alternative to a full Nexus setup. The option of hooking up TWO laptops at once for easy DJ transfers is a very clever move in that respect as that is an everyday occurence in many places which leads to quite a few awkward (or worse) moments in the booth.
Lot’s of people talking about how it is a pity there is no RekordBox support, but let’s not forget that a majority of venues still has (Pioneer) gear that isn’t RekordBox compatible (or even has USB option).
As I have said from the launch, it’s gonna be very interesting to see how this unit will do.

KeymasterGoing from a DDJ-SX to a 850 is actually a downgrade …
February 7, 2014 at 6:09 pm #1028685gullum
Participantagree on the players not being an upgrade but the mixer sure would be and by adding and DDJ SP1 I would have the same options as on the DDJ SX.
The DDJ SZ just made it to thomann.de and it’s actually €620 less then a 850 setup and would cost me around €2300 when I have it. hefty price but better then the ca €3600 that the 850 would cost me with the SP1. So quite a lot just to be able to play CD and use Rekordbox 😀Guess it’s going to be the DDJ SZ then
February 7, 2014 at 8:19 pm #1028704Terry_42
KeymasterWell playing CD and using rekordbox = 2 things totally wrong in one sentence.
The mixer in the SX is totally fine, if you insist on using CDs, get some used Denon or Technics older CDJs and be done with it, hook them up to the SX and you will be fine.
Going to rekordbox from Serato is like having to put a Diesel engine in your Lamborghini Aventador…
