Participanta friend of mine just bought the SR and he likes it alot. I have the SZ and to be honoust, it’s not often that I use all 4 channels. Sometimes I use 1 and 2 for my Traktor yeps, I use Traktor with the SZ) and 3 and 4 for my cdj’s, but when do you play more than 2 tracks at the same time? Not very often, right?
Sure, the SX is more advanced, but it has been used in a club for 3 years, so it has had it’s share of abuse. Dj’s take care of their own gear, but when they use someone elses stuff, things get a bit wilder.
So I would choose the smaller SR, because you can be sure that the Sx will start showing problems very soon.

ParticipantThanks for your input Snowbro. True, I would probably only use the extra channels to have that extra track ready to go when needed: an emergency dancefloor-filler, some request, a specific song that goes with some act that will be performed by guests,.. I wouldn’t play more than 2 tracks at a time often. And anyway, an SR still has some 4-deck capabilities.

ParticipantThe DDJ-SX has a standalone mixer and enables you to use your device along with CD players, turntables or other interfaces, with or without having a computer connected. I feel this is the biggest plus for the DDJ-SX over the DDJ-SR as if your software crashes or your computer has issues you can still get sound to your speakers by hooking up your phone or other audio output device on one of the spare channels and still have access to a low pass/high pass filter combo, EQ and up/cross faders. In that scenario the audience would hopefully be none the wiser to the your major dramas. At a pinch you could DJ with 2x iPods/phones using the filter and faders to blend/cut from track to track. The extra channels are also great for having full control over your microphone output sound. The build quality of the DDJ-SX is also superior along with the layout being more spacious and less cramped.

ParticipantThanks Dj Maxy. The stand-alone capability is a strong point. I always worry about worse-case scenarios, and the SX could be part of a back-up plan in itself, true. Hm, not an easy choice!

ModeratorDon’t forget that the SX has no DVS capabilities! The SX2 does.

ParticipantI can’t see myself needing DVS any time soon, so that’s not a problem to me. The SX2 is more recent of course, so I suppose it wouldn’t go unsupported as soon as the SX probably will. An SX2 is out of my range, even second hand, so that might be a plus for the more recent SR over the old SX. Thanks for your input DJ Vintage!

ParticipantI have both the DDJ-SX and the DDJ-SR (bought the latter as a backup device and for gigs in cramped DJ booths).
Maybe I just had bad luck with the DDJ-SR, but I’ve had to let it repair twice by Pioneer during the last two years. It also crashed Serato frequently in the beginning although that was resolved by a firmware upgrade. My DDJ-SX on the other hand has not once let me down in the last three and a half years. But maybe this is an isolated case and my DDJ-SR may have been built on a monday morning? 🙂
As already mentioned here, the standalone functionality of the mixer in the DDJ-SX is a big plus. Other nice-to-have features (although by no means necessary) are the needle drop and the buttons to adjust the beat grids directly from the controller.
I’m looking forward to a DDJ-SR2 that matches the features of the DDJ-RR RekordBox controller (built-in mixer, needle drop, coloured pads …) or maybe even more to the Mixars Primo which seems to pack the features of a 2 channel DDJ-SX2 in the form factor of a small Vestax controller.

ParticipantI eventually settled for the SR since the deal on the SX didn’t go through. I am quite happy with it, an SX2 might be my next step. But for now: time to practice. My first gig with the SR (supporting a small festival at a camping :°) went well.
Thanks again everyone! -
