This applies to every artist that gets shit on (justified or not) from Guetta to Nickleback. Let’s step outside of the box for a moment.

Imagine you were a very popular artist, making tons of money. Your primary fanbase are the trendy Top40 crowd who go bananas for your songs.

Are you a sell-out? You might be, you might not be, here’s how to know for sure.

Do you love what you do? If so, congratulations, you are NOT a sell-out. You have not compromised your principles in order to make money. Make songs or play sets that *YOU* enjoy.

If Guetta likes the music he makes, and you call him a sell-out, guess what? You’re jealous and refuse to admit it. He’s having fun and doing what he loves. The difference is only dollars, and dollars alone does not mean sell-out. Otherwise, I have a huge long list of musicians from the last 100 years to counter your arguments.

good point chris. thinking about it, in order to be a sellout, dont you have to first be dominating the underground scene? excuse me if im wrong but wasnt he always a mainstream top 40 artist, even when he was only popular in europe?

seems to me like he just got really good at what he was originally doing. theres no need to hate, hes doing his thing. everybody else should do theirs as well.

one more thing, everybody can be looking at this the wrong way. guetta is almost like a gateway artist for most people to discover the world of edm. i know a ton of people who have learned about the genre through guetta and are now much deeper into the music. im pretty sure the likes of tiesto, armin or whoever have you are all appreciative of their new bigger fan bases.

Someone has to go commercial and be the mainstream DJ, someone has to give the people what they want. I mostly don’t consider him much of a DJ, more of a producer for other artists. But don’t worry the EDM scene is changing, you can see it every day all of them are taking over the world: progressive house, dirty dutch, dubstep, drum and bass, and all the other genres are picking up quickly around the world, David Guetta will no longer have a chance, although, in his last album he showed some improvement over his main Pop songs, he still made more than half of the album Pop, but there is a different style somewhere in there, you can hear it or is it just me?

“We have 2 categories, we have that good shit, and that other shit” Doin’ Ya Thang – oliver S. One of my favorite songs. One thing you all need to remember, the music scenery has never been about the one who makes music, its all about the one who listens to it. The entire world wants music to dance to, David Guetta succeeds here giving the people what they want, he earned popularity, he earned money, and he doesn’t care about our opinion. So why do we discuss? The only way we can kill this is by making real good music and spreading it to the people for them to love it, many DJs nowadays are succeding with this, among them are Skrillex, Zedd, Cazzette, Avicii, Hardwell, Afrojack, Chuckie, Dada Life, Kaskade, Gregori Klosman, Deniz Koyu, Dimitri vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Romero, Basto, Alesso, R3hab, Tommy Trash and many more, David Guetta is only a matter of time.

I was always pretty much indifferent to him, even before he got big and “sold out” (no inherent fault of his though, his music just wasn’t a style that I cared for). However, I was able to see a full set of his when he headlined a night at Ultra Music Festival last year and my respect for him as a dj increased immensely. Although I still didn’t care for some of his music selection, his mixing was impeccable, even rivaling some of the best I’ve seen. I then began accepting the notion that he may actually deserve the top 5 DJ Mag placement. I don’t know what the popular opinion of the DJ Mag rankings is around here, but I’ve never had a problem with them until this year.

To sidetrack on that for a moment, moving the rankings from a DJ Mag voter system to a Facebook system was a horrible move. Whereas the original system limited voting to those who are already knowlegable about and love EDM enough to register with DJ Mag, the new Facebook system opens voting to, namely, the 14 year old girls who “liked” Guetta on Facebook because they heard his name on the radio and now receive messages from him asking them for their vote. Imagine how the Academy Awards would be if based on a similar system.

Back to point, although I didn’t agree with his taking the #1 slot this year, I was still looking forward to seeing another set of his as he performed at the DJ Mag award show… which he, as anyone who saw it can attest, completely bombed, thoroughly disappointing me, and confirming the suspicions of many others who did not have as positive of a view of him.

All said, I suppose my opinion of him is still a bit indifferent. Based on his UMF set, it’s comforting to me to know he does at least have a decent amount of skill and technical ability. On the other hand, every new “David Guetta ft. (insert pop star)” track crooning “I love you so much baby,” or rapping “I want to do you baby” makes me a little more cynical.

David Guetta makes more money than you. He’s top DJ. He’s French. Admit it. He beat us all. Shut up and do work all of you.

Justin Bieber makes more money than me and is way more famous than me! Guess what though, still not an artist, still dont feel beaten by him, still do not want to be like him! The argument of judging anyone’s opinion on a DJ-artist based on the DJ’s – artist’s popularity is childish…….to say the least!

Basically what I was saying is that he’s above us. Nothing we can do about it. Just use your dislike of him (or Mr. Bieber) to be the best you can be. I mean shit, guetta put in like 20 years of work in before he got to where he is now. I’m just sick of people hating when it really does nothing. :/

Above he can only be when the criteria is money or fame! I never said those were my criteria – if yours are, then yes he is above you! Im not hating, Im expressing my opinion. Its you who are judging my opinion by implying that I should respect someone only because of his fame and money.
More famous than me? yes sure he is…….
    Richer than me….yes he is!
    My idol? No…..
    Jealous? Hell no Im not!
Would I want to be him? No as weird and unbelievable as you might find this!
Above me? A starving kid in Africa is above me! Not Guetta!
