ParticipantIt’s bollocks from guys who seemingly worry more about image than entertaining.
Apparently, at least according to a couple vinyl DJ’s…
There’s the start. Not saying all vinyl DJs are haters, but I do notice the mass majority of “critics” are vinyl purists or something of the sort.
dancing behind the DJ booth makes me a wanna-be DJ Bl3nd (who?).
Excuse you for having a good time and being into your set.
Oh, and the fact that I’m using a laptop makes me an all visuals, “waveform dependent” DJ. And one last thing, if it weren’t for the SYNC button, I’d be “lost” (untrue on many different levels).
Topic has been beaten to death. I’d just jump up and down in the booth when they play…see how well their needles stay on the records. I came from vinyl, but that alone was a problem that needed to be solved in DJing, not something you embrace.
I love to dance to music, that’s what got me into DJ’ing in the first place. Enjoying dancing, music and watching other people have a good time.
Don’t stop loving it. I’ll dance in the booth, in my room, whenever I hear a beat that carries me.
What’s with all these losers bashing new DJ’s?
They are guys who woke up one morning and found out the fact they buy analog vinyl has no real bearing on their talent or marketability as a DJ. They found out that technology has enhanced their trade to the point that most people can pick up and work to being great at it with good song selection, crowd connection, and creativity.
They’re just bitter because they’re not special anymore. Many of them also seem to fall into the old school trap where they sit all day bashing new music and cling to some past point in time they won’t let go of.
I’m not bad, I’m not bad at all. I practice a lot, have had several paid gigs and more coming up, but the fact that I use a laptop and controller makes me a “wavie, SYNC-button using wanna-be DJ Bl3nd”? That’s like calling somebody a fake traveler because they use a car to get from Point A to Point B, and that a real traveler walks there.
I use SYNC…and I admit it. I came up from vinyl and can manually beatmatch on vinyl, CDs, or controllers…but why? If I have tools to make my life easier then why reject them? That’s like rejecting a food processor to stay with a mortar and pestle, or chopping it all by hand (cooking references).
I dislike the idea of spending $3,000.00 on a set up that is large, bulky and expensive.
That became my big point. I got tired of spending $10-$12 for one record. I also especially grew tired of walking into venues and the 1200s they had were falling apart. I love showing up with a controller, hooking up, playing, and then taking it home whenever I want. No scratchamp or similar item to futz with, no heavy crates to lug.
They also accused me of “undercutting DJs”.
I’d ask them what do they have to offer that merits them getting the money they demand. I’ll ask that of any professional who complains of undercutting and yet I can see they have nothing to offer that merits a high pay compared to the competition.
I’m tired of all these vinyl using guys bashing me for not using vinyl (I hardly consider these guys vinyl users, anyways, being as how they hook their turntables up to Serato Scratch Live).
Keep on playing, take their gigs, and let them moan some more. If you’re the DJ rocking crowds and bringing heads, you win in this game. If they can’t accept that, then they should pack up and call it a career.
Anybody else experiencing this frustration? I’m getting better, learning more and expanding and most of all, having a fun time but these jerks keep trying to bring me down!
Don’t quit…to **** with the haters.

ModeratorLOL, I have been dancing behind the decks since 1974 (and EVERYBODY was a vinyl jock in those days!).
My customers love me for it. It helps set the mood as well. Nothing like a DJ clearly enjoying himself.
So keep it up and if those wannabe Vinyl purist keep giving you a hard time, tell them to give me a call :D.
Keep up the good work m8, even if a discussion like this is a bit like preaching to the choir at Digital DJ Tips, where we love all things digital.

Chuck

ParticipantI dont get it, how or why they think dancing behind a dj deck makes you a wanna-be dj who ??
So if two sexy ladies got up to my dj booth dancing and twerking on the left side and the right side of me, to the tunes that I SPIN, I supposed to just ignored them and hide behind my own shadows??? HECK NO!, I bump-n-grind with them to the max !!!
Too many of the local DJ’s, just stared endlessly to their gears and laptop, just stand there like a statue,
Not I,
Fist Pumpin, Jesus pose, cha cha slide, heck do the shuffle, I’m a very large dude and I dont exercise much, so yeah I considered behind the deck is my way to exercise lol

KeymasterWell unlike Chuck I did not dance behind the decks since 1974 (as this was the year I was born hehe) but since I can remember when I was still DJing with 2 crappy beltdrive turntables and a selfmade crossfader-mixer.
I have played in front of 10k+ people and danced my ass off …
And coming from vinyl I totally agree, I sold all that stuff as digital equipment is just so much easier to carry around with you…
I will not even get into the other things…
But know this: Most of it is envy. Most of them prolly invested 10k into their equipment and have no breathing room as they make poor money DJing in some local club and now there comes a guy with 200 bucks controller and a laptop showing them he has a good time… sacrilege!

ParticipantIgnore them. Beside it being not true what they say, I also think it’s rude and arrogant. You know D Jam has got a point. Back in the days if you had records and two 1200’s + a mixer you were “the man”. back then DJíng was not that accessible as it is now. It was really expensive. It is easier now to start DJ’ing. But that is good. Let people enjoy it.
Using a crossfader, dancing. Too bad, so many Digital DJ’s get that much hate. Well, this old vinyl DJ thinks the new generation is doing an awesome job. With your loop rolls, FX, mash ups, slicer, sample decks, finger drumming. It challenges me to try and learn new things.

ParticipantIf you’re dancing to the music you’re playing, it only means you truly enjoy your craft. Don’t pay any attention to what other DJ’s say. I do that too since my vinyl days up to my laptop days. Dancing is better than the Jesus pose. 😀
I met a DJ about a decade ago. He used CDJ’s. I was in the booth with him and he does a funny dance swaying sideways. Aside from enjoying himself, I surmise that’s how he counts beats before he beatmatches.
So, dance to your heart’s desire. If you enjoy it, nobody can dictate to you what to do. It’s not illegal and it’s your style. Keep dancing, buddy.

ParticipantHigh Horses!
I am a graphic designer by trade, so are these people suggesting i ditch my Mac and go and buy a load of Sharpie’s and a scalpel? Ill go back to the dark ages then shall I.
I have a lot of respect for the Vinyl guys, thats where we all started (well, us old guys anyway). But one thing my trade has tought me is to embrace the good technology, it can be your friend and really open up new doors for you.
I love the looping facility on my controller, a lot of hip hop and funk does not have long intro’s so the loop allows you to blend the tracks nicely.
And assuming i am correct in my assumption here: If Itch is used is that not basically the same as having a controller….but with 12″ jog wheels?!?!
Hippo-crates 😉
