MemberIf I do end up going this route: APC 40 + A2DJ seems like the PERFECT setup.

MemberWe have a very good mate doing the Ableton course as i type ( Mixcloud page here… http://www.mixcloud.com/brendan-idolitus-hughes/ )
He is gonna get the Vestax Vcm600 controller.. No doubt once he gets adept with it he’ll be landing on my doormat with his Mac and Controller… Ill report what its like once he does!July 18, 2011 at 3:53 pm #1001090pilotmike327
Memberthanks buddy. I’ve been watching some videos online of the apc 40 in action with ableton and it looks fantastic. The Vestax is hard to find online and a bit more expensive. Just keep me posted on how DJing goes.

MemberI’m starting using Ableton for djing with Korg Nanokontrol but at the very beginning you don’t really need a “perfect” midi controller

I know most people think of it as a production tool more than a DJing tool. After using Traktor for a couple of months already, I kinda had my mind set on using this as my DJ software. However, looking at that box today had me reconsidering this.
Ableton is such an in-depth program. This is actually my biggest concern with it! The learning curve is such a huge worry for me. I remember using this program to produce and becoming frustrated after I saw little progress. I’m saving up to buy another Mac as my current one died on me a few months back and plan on installing it again. In the meantime I plan to skim through the manual to refresh a bit and see if this might actually be a possibility for me for both DJing and Production.
Hello Mike 🙂
As you know; whenever anyone mentions Ableton and DJ’ing I will Pop Up 😀
From using Ableton as a Production Tool to Learning How to DJ with it (Ableton 8 Suite); took me about 4 Months;
So; if you wish to Learn to DJ as I did; I have done a Lot of the Work for you (in Searching Out Tutorials); and Of Course will be Willing to Help You Too :);
Some People use Session View for DJ’ing; Others will Use Arrangement View; whatever you Ultimately Choose makes No Difference as I Use Both; it just Depends What I am doing;
For Starters; just to show you One Simple Way of DJ’ing in Ableton; I thought I would Attach a Video for you;
This Definitely is Not The Only Way; but will give you Something To Practice Today If You Choose 🙂

MemberGreat introductory Video. I’ve been using ableton for Djing on and off for about 1 year. Like Emma said said it can take a while to get a hang of it but once you do, you will love it. I still Dj with traktor but I always use ableton in the background for my samples.

MemberHello Ivyquake 🙂
Unbelievably I watched the Video you just put up at 5am this morning 😀
The Challenge I have with Traktor and Ableton though; is that Ableton will Only Run off my Internal Soundcard; and Traktor will Only Run off an ASIO; so I am Unable to Link them (which is what I Wanted To Do);
And there is No Possibility of me Affording an External Soundcard 🙁Although Mike may be able to; and it is his Thread after all 🙂

MemberWhat i’m actually trying to do (at least while I start off and get the basics down) is focus on one piece of software before I venture off into combining different ones. I feel pretty confident to invest a little more than the Mixtrack Pro if in the long run it gives me more flexibility.
So it’s either:
Ableton with APC40
or
Traktor or Serato with TwitchI don’t see a need for jogwheels in my case! :p
After weeks of going back and forth, comparing, reading reviews, watching videos, I feel like one of these two will be the final choice. I won’t buy anything until I’m confident in my decision.
As for now, I’ll be watching the video’s you all have posted, become more familiar with both options, and keep watching the threads!

MemberI’ve been using Ableton,traktor to do dj mixes for a couple of years now(mainly in Ableton) but used traktor for a while now. My only problem with traktor is the beat grid and sometimes it won’t recognize certain beat signatures its annoying!

MemberI agree. I have less than 100 songs in my library currently and have already encountered a few songs that had a horrible beat grid.

@ Pilotmike327, you should def just focus on one software first, I suggest you go with the APC40.

I Use Ableton Without A Controller Mike; and Always have done; if you have the Money for an APC40 then Go For it;
But Yes; Concentrating on One Piece Of Software is Always Going to be the Best thing;
I bought Traktor Pro 2 (with Birthday Money); but it just sits there in a Folder on my Desktop; I used to use Traktor DJ Studio 3.2 and it was Cool; but once I Learned How to DJ in Ableton I have Never looked Back;
At the moment you have the Product (I was using Ableton with just 500MB of Ram up until Christmas quite Happily);
and you don’t have to spend any more money unless you Want to;
I have given my Bit; any Further Questions I will Happily answer; but it looks like you are now Considering 2 Options rather than the Original One you Posted; so the Decision is Yours 🙂July 19, 2011 at 3:41 am #4118pilotmike327
MemberAlrighty! Let’s try this baby out. I don’t know if I should do a full install on this computer and use up a license code or run a demo and wait to get my new comp and install it at that time. I remember reading that you can only register 2 computers so i’m not sure if installing the full version on this one is a wise choice (as i installed a full version on my last mac).

MemberIve done loads of mixes for radio shows over the years in Ableton although it took me a while get used to the new warping feature in Ableton 8 but its ok now. The only thing I haven’t yet used fully in Live is doing mixing on the fly for me its no much messing round, by the time ive warped and marker-ed the mp3 or wav i could of just mixed in on cdj or vinyl deck ha ha.
