ParticipantIm glad my post got such a positive reaction, i think its even more inspiring when i hear guys like you that have got kids as well that somehow find the time to squeeze it all in. Its really great to hear, it was phils initial piece that got me to make the post in the first place. When i told a few of my friends that i was going to order a brand new MIDI controller and a new laptop at my age, all ex vinyl djs who have all given up now thought i was mad. But i would say going digital for me (I now have a RELOOP DJ3 ME and i love it, amazing controller) has been one of the best things ive done for myself for years. Its rekindled my love for music after giving up on vinyl due to cost. I live on an island in the med meaning that the shipping costs alone are more than double sometimes quadruple the price of a single record. Thats before insurance and tax! Its a brave new world and EVERYONE is invited, including the DADS!

ParticipantGreat to read your post mate. This love of mixing music is not just for the youngsters (hey we were there once too). Loved the story about the iPad & dJay, I’ve had almost identical experiences myself and the iPad has got me back into mixing again after a break of nearly ten years. Don’t ever stop just because you’re getting older than some. Dance music is as old as time itself, we just got to find out earlier than some.

MemberHi guys & girls.
I just signed up to this site to get some info & this is the first thread I came across & what a subject 🙂
I am 52, moved to France from UK with my lady in August 2010, became a dad again aged 50 in Oct 2010 etc etc etc
I love my music. 35 years ago I done some DJing, mainly Northern Soul & disco, the 70s lol…
Recently I sold off my vinyl collection but have in the region of 150,000 mp3 files, a mixture of everything but i’d say 70% is dance orientated, soul, funk, disco, latin, house, rare groove etc. Many friends who come to our house get blown away when I put some tunes on the sound system, they just love my collection of vintage soul etc…
Anyway, people have been trying to get me to DJ at small house parties and small venues, I have declined mainly because of my age, 52. The other day I was out & picked up a very cheap 2nd hand Hercules MP3 control mixer, got home and set it up with Virtual DJ. After a few hours of going through some great tunes, I thought, hmmmm, maybe just maybe i’ll give this a shot. I’m not predjudiced against any genre of music, I just love my rare grooves, I don’t want to be a fancy club DJ, beat matching everything that is 150bpm, I will just give people a sample of good ol’ funk & soul 🙂
Hey, at 52 i’ve been to lots of house parties, bars, clubs, raves. I’ve had plenty of great night & weekends & have some great memories, friends & stories 😉
As long as you love your music, you’re never too old. Just play to the right audience who’ll appreciate your style.
Now I have the bug again, i’ll invest more time, money & get a few venues in the good old South West of France and give them a taste of a 52 year old funker.
Be good 🙂June 18, 2012 at 12:40 pm #1006372Jahit Halil
Participantwow good on ya mate, although ı wouldnt have sold the records, even though ı have now gone digital İ havnt been able to part wıth my vinyl which is also mainly funk soul disco etc. Who knows maybe one day İ will. But i believe its even more important than ever for someone with your knowlegde and experience to dj out more often. The first ‘raves’ i ever went to comprised of djs much much older than me blowing my mind with rare groove and disco and since then ive been buying records ever since and now digital. Good luck and may the funk always be with us!!!

MemberIt’s great to see how many of us our out there. I’m 48 and been DJing since my mid 20s. But really been into music most of my life. DJing is just an extension of that love of music. For those of us who cut our teeth on vinyl, not having to worry about lugging a crate of records and a coffin full of turntables to a gig makes a huge difference. It’s part of the reason I got back into it and actively sought out securing a regular gig. In saying that, I still do take a bag of records and one 1210 with me! But I’m loving learning what I can do with software and my new Novation Itch. So I’m getting the best of both worlds. And so are my kids. (I posted this photo elsewhere, but it’s worth putting here as well). Here’s my son learning a bit of beat juggling.
