Well theoretically yes, but the X1 is very small and cramped and limits your options, unless you get a Traktor Scratch compatible audio and use the turntables with it. That is kind of expensive however…

I would maybe start from the other side, get a starter controller like the mixtrack pro or beatmix and familiarize myself with those. You can easily play gigs with those controllers and once you outgrow them, they sell like hotcakes on ebay and you will know what you want from there.

Thanks Terry, good points, as I’ve said i’m not married to the 1210s and think a solution involving them is possibly too expensive and frankly unnecessary.

I have a completely irrational dislike for controllers with jogwheels – they always look like toys to me. So I’m thinking second hand Novation Twitch – have seen them on ebay for £250. That’s within budget, doesn’t seem like a compromise either – it’ll do everything I need and more at home AND will be a really nice addition to my friend’s Serato setup. And to my mind it looks very cool and like it’s a lot of fun to play with, which is important of course! Think this is a reasonable choice?

Hi James. I’ve just bought another controller, a Twitch and can thoroughly recommend it. It’s a a fantastic controller, one of the best I’ve had. £250 is expensive for a second hand one though. A new one will only set you back £280, if you’re in the UK and you’ll get the lifetime updates to Serato.

Sure the twitch will be a good controller, but if you want to use it with SSL this will be a whole other matter.

I also would not dismiss controller with jogs easily. I know I have come from Technics turntables too and for a long time was a sceptic that anything else will do… I however am very fond of my Terminal Mix and the jogs on it even allow me to do my scratch routines. (not that I am a scratch master, but I can hold my own.)

Hmm, so I couldn’t use it with his gear linked up to his 1210s. Still tempted to use at home. But am I right in thinking we could have it all set up together – just not all interacting together?

Terry – I’m not really dismissive of jog wheels – appreciate as I said it’s completely irrational. I don’t really do any scratching – I just play various types of house music mainly.

Hmm sure you can even link the 2 systems with a faderfox or a standard DJ mixer without any problem. The twitch is a nice little package and highly portable.

I guess if nothing else I could have a laptop and twitch going into the 3rd channel on the mixer and he could have channels 1 and 2 hooked up to his laptop and 1210s. But you are saying with a faderfox (will have to find out what that is) we could both control the same laptop – him with 1210s and me with the Twitch? It’s not the path I was originally considering but must admit now I’ve seen it, the portability, size, affordability and most importantly simplicity of the twitch are very appealing. Maybe I should pursuade my dj partner to ditch the 1210s too – we could sell them all and buy some good speakers with the money!

You are right about the mixer, no problemo to do it.
No the faderfox is just like any other DJ mixer, just a lot smaller and more portable if you want to carry it around.
Yes 1210s have a pretty good resale value, especially if they are in good condition and you have OKish slipmats and some needles to throw in. I gave mine a full refresh (aka polished them up), put a pair of my custom slipmats on (which I have no use for without the turntables) and some needles and they sold like a hotcake on ebay, if I remember correctly I nearly got 80% of the street price for new ones.
