A few month ago, i had recommended a few other controllers …. the Vestax Vci-400 or the Denon MC 6000 for example. But I think at the moment a NI -S4 is the best choice 4 Ur needs. Unfortunatelly all the other attractive devices are custumized for Serato. If U know a device which has a design and surface, thats more suitable to ur needs than the S4 has. And if U know if there is a really good working mapping for that device then ….
But the S4 is the safe way …..

If you are using Traktor, get a Native Instruments controller – so a S4 or a S8..

Any other controllers in all likeliness will not be supported when the new version of Traktor comes out – as it is, non NI controllers do not respond properly (Eg the Jogs) compared to NI controllers without a lot of work mapping. And even then it won’t be perfect.. NI controllers however just work out of the box..

Well I have heard from other people that getting a MkI S4 is a bad idea as the software is due to be upgraded soon and I would need a Mk2 controller to use the features and be compatible (I’m taking this on blind faith, tell me if my friend is an idiot). So that really limits my price range at the moment to buying a new S2. Now since I am new to mixing, I have no problem doing that and taking some time to really get comfortable mixing 2 decks. Could I then eventually go buy a used F1? I only really see myself using a third deck for samples and acapellas and the new Stems have me real excited and this seems like the best reasonably priced hardware (not a D2) that controls those stems well. I am mixing dubstep/bass music so I think that may be all I really need.

I would seriously consider that NI is free to do what it wants and doesn’t have to bother thinking about other manufacturers when they come out with something new. Probably the S4 mk1 will still do the basic functions it has always does, but I also believe that it will not be able to accomodate some new features.

So S4 mk2 or S8 (check out Phil’s series on the S8 with Traktor, including Stems over on the blog).
