MemberNo. There is _no_ music that should never be played.
There’s lots of stuff I don’t like, and am unlikely to play, but I refuse to limit my own creativity with blanket rules. Even for almost humour.
Because it’s _almost_ funny to hate on Bieber, or Avicii.

ParticipantI guess it depends on what type of DJ you are. If you’re not a commercial DJ (nothing wrong with that by the way – its just not for me) then there’s a line you must draw about how cheesy you will go. I’d much rather drop an underground bomb that gets the dancefloor pumping that whore myself out to playing some cheddar.

You know, you’d think that, yet somehow I managed to end a hip-hop set with the Chicken Dance a couple months back… Granted, it was just me and some barstaff left (failed event that never really materialised) AND we may have all consumed copious amounts of alcohol first. But we all got up on the bar and danced like idiots and made a complete and through mess of the place.
And this basically proves that despite what anyone else here might say (joking or serious), there is nothing that is off limits. Some things won’t fit with some events and should probably be avoided, but if your crowd will enjoy something, don’t not play it just because you’ve limited yourself with a bunch of silly rules in your mind.

Agree 100X
Ive said it probably a ton of times on this forums…but lets be honest here…any DJ can grab all the latest songs and choons and make everyone dance because they know the tracks….but really anyone can do this…Its finding the gems that no one knows about that you can really tear the roof off and make people go ballistic.
Do you want to be that DJ that plays the same tracks as 1/2 the DJs in your city? Or are you willing to spend the copious amounts of time sifting through blog sites, soundcloud and other musical resources to find that track that no one else has.

Participantyou have heard levels…but it probably wasnt “Levels” it was Flor Rida – Good Feeling…which is esentially a vocal version of levels

ParticipantI just listened to Flo Rida and Levels.
It’s catchy. I can see why mainstream folk like it. Me personally, I honestly have not followed any of this poppy electro David Guetta-influenced stuff. You could play a whole set of the most popular tunes to me and I probably could ID maybe 1 or 2 tracks.
Maybe I just have the luxury of avoiding all the recent pop crap because I’m not actively playing in clubs. 🙂

On the DJTT blog they coined the DJs who do this as having “Levels Syndrome”. Feel free to use that one…I have been.
