ModeratorI’ll support the Mixtrack Pro vote. On a more general note, in the past when I started something new I would usually buy good quality (mostly used) gear. If I ended up not liking the new activity I had some pretty decent gear that I could sell to someone who was either starting to and making the step from beginner gear to something better. Plus, while discovering if this new things was something I’d like to continue doing, I’d have really good gear to try it out with, which helps to enhance the experience.
On the other hand, on the one or two occassions that I bought new low end gear, the quality of the gear or the limited options would put me off and I could never resell the gear for any serious money.
So, if budget allows, look into quality used gear, often if you use it for 2 months and don’t like it, you can probably sell it for almost the same amount you got it for.
Here in Holland we have a company where you can rent/lease gear (not sure they have controllers, they are more into studio stuff and such) for a longer period of time. This is also an option as prices are really sharp. You could rent/short lease some pro gear for 1-2 months. Fully guaranteed, fully serviced, properly flightcased and if you don’t like it you give it back at the end of the term. If you do like it, you can extend the lease til you find something you want to buy for yourself.

ParticipantMy 10yr old son was playing with one of these (beatmix) at a local DJ store open day recently. He loved it (gettin his scratch on, thinking he was QBert hahaha), i was really surprised at the low cost of this controller (£180), it looks really good value to me. I thought i might get him one, then i remembered he would need a Macbook as well….maybe not just yet then 🙂

ModeratorNo need for a MacBook Pro right away. You can do it with any ole laptop you have laying around. Or even a fixed PC. Might need some tweaking (making it dual-boot so you have a clean install for DJ-ing is always a very good plan), but should not be a problem. Especially for a young DJ just starting out.

ModeratorCome on … you don’t give your kid a Porsche when he goes to college, he can driver around in an old beat up VW bug for a while, learning that if you want that Porsche you’d better study hard and work hard 😎

MemberAfter searching and searching high and low for reviews and forum posts there is just nothing near the mixtrack pro. I loved mine.

MemberI agree on the mixtrack pro, but I’m also vouching for the American Audio VMS2.
It’s around the same price, has a full metal construction, rubber feet, and plenty of I/O’s(for a 2C controller)!

ParticipantHow cheap?
What about the DJ2GO? It has no tone controls, but if your friend wants a really cheap entry into digital Djing, that would be it.
Plus it’s worth keeping around once you upgrade to bigger and better.
