Why CDJs? Seems like a step backwards from digital.

    Seconded!

    I can’t help but wonder…

What would CDJ2Ks and the DJM2K allow you to do that you can’t do with your current setup?

A pair CDJ 2000s and a DJM 2000 is over $6000, and if you want 4 CDJs it’s close to $10,000. You could put together an enviable digital setup for that price.
Maybe Traktor scratch pro 2 with a pair of high end stanton turntables, with an S4 as a mixer, then maybe a novation twitch on a stand for extra fun. And include the price of a nice laptop. That’s the kind of set up you could buy.

Most djs I’ve spoken to in the area have recommended going down the cd route as quite a lot of the clubs where I hope to get work use cdjs

If you can’t use your digital setup in a club at all, wouldn’t a basic setup be good enough to practice on?
Or would you need to bring your own setup to the club?

Wouldn’t your basic need be a setup you could use to practice on?
Imho, you could still do that on a digital setup, but you’d need to keep a library of CDs for when you play in the club.
And someone better correct me if I’m wrong!

    So, again:
What would CDJ2Ks and the DJM2K allow you to do that you can’t do with your current setup? ๐Ÿ™‚

    Just my 2 cents ๐Ÿ˜‰

You can unplug a CDJ and plug your controller output directly into the mixer input and then go from there. Just remember to put it back the way it was for the next DJ.

The other option is using timecoded CD’s. In my experience it’s less responsive than a DVS sytem though.

I guess this isn’t really the place to go for advice about which CDJ’s & DJM to buy as most of us here are digital/controller advocates.

Also I think that many of us here can’t justify the cost of the set up you suggested as we feel that digital is not only a more cost effective solution but also offers more creativity in your mixing and sets.

However all that aside if you are going to go down the CDJ / DJM road then get a set up that is easy adaptable to digital so you can have the best of both worlds. So I would recommend the DJM 900 Nexus over the DJM 2000.

Also Arbite is 100% correct. Plugging into a club mixer needn’t be a huge ordeal. Here’s a good how to :

Firstly this is a “digital dj” site so most of us will recommend laptop based setups…. I’d recommend tractor s4, and a brand new MacBook pro along with a could thousand songs of your choice… This is the pioneer equiv to digital and you can do everything and more with this setup…

Plus if you need to play anywhere that doesn’t have a dj setup it’s a lot easier to plug in and be up and running.

And the community on here can help with it a lot.

if you want the cdjs to practise on, buy secondhand cdj1000s or 800s, save a fortune so you can also get the macbook and s4, all for under the new price of the cdj2000, when it comes to gear more IS better!! lol!!

Or even a pair of Reloops would do I guess…

Firs of all you can do a lot of things on CDJ/DJM that you can not do on digital setups.

There is a really good handle of the efx unit and you have a very good control over the music on bigger joggs.
You can run the CDJs from CD, USB direct, USB with recordbox, or MIDI with for examle Traktor.

There is not very much that can compete with that set for digital setups.

There is one other set that can compete and that is the Denon S3700 x1600/1700 setup.

CD, USB, MIDI with spinning platter for half the price of CDJ’s and X1600/1700 are Traktor certified
(DJM 2000/900 are also Traktor certified)

Try this on a Mixtrak Pro _

    Hmm, cool stuff!

I get where you’re coming from, but let’s not get out of hand here ๐Ÿ™‚

I was merely suggesting, based on MBPRPG’s original post; that he might not have to invest in the upper-echelon of hardware, while a digital setup (or low-end setup) might serve the purpose for him. (Assuming male gender here, I might be wrong.)

It’s down to MBPRPG’s needs, if a digital controller would suffice anyway, that’s great; if he needed to learn how to play on CD players, fine as well! (Maybe not the perfect place to ask, but…meh) Low-end/high-end, we’re just having a bit of a well-spirited discussion here, I think, because most of us chose for a digital setup and might be a little struck by going for a high-end solution…for home-use. (That might just only be my personal opinion though.)

In the end, it’s all down to personal preference. To me, I was just more thinking basics, than all the additional bells and whistles…at home.

firstly im pretty sure the dj in that video would be capable of a somewhat representation of that on a mixtrack…… secondly not many dj’s could replicate that (there is a reason he is on that video…..) its a selling point so im pretty sure many that buy that product shit them selves when they find out they cant do that :(.
then you gotta take into consideration the price of cdj’s, mixer, fx-unit (if built into mixer costs a lot more) then the media we choose to use… usb sticks still cost money.

then you can add transportation. if your playing a gig that you need to bring your own gear and just plug into a speaker there is no hoping on a train or walking a few miles with 2 cdj’s a mixer and a few usb sticks and cables (at minimum). but a bag with a laptop and controller is possible.

I can see this turning into a cdj v laptop dj thread but on a “Digital dj” site most will stick up for their own medium and offer the plus sides. Im not bashing cdj’s as ive used them for years and still do the odd time. Just think its not a good idea to splash out a good few thousand on 2000’s as a starter setup (even restarting). they are way too expensive.

Agreed. Unless you’re super loaded, I think CDJ850 – 900’s are the max your rould really need for home use.

If you really want to go down the CDJ route, the CDJ350/DJM350 combo is ideal for a beginner. Great value for money (for Pioneer :p) and you can use USB/CD media or hook them up to your computer and use Rekordbox if you want.

Honestly, half the clubs I’ve played at cant even afford CDJ2000’s, and if you’re just using them to control Trakor or something, you’ve got $2000 jog wheels…..
