    Hey Daniel,

    Speaking for myself, I find the whole genre (and especially sub-genre) thing a tad strange. It’s not like there are hard set rules (and if there were, who are the people that have the right to qualify?) for genres even, let alone for sub-genres. If you google the various sub-genres, you will certainly find plenty of information about them. Another thing to do is go over to beatport and just listen to their top X lists per genre to get a feeling about what category/genre THEY stick tracks in.

    Just saying that genres (debatable) and sub-genres (I am pretty sure) are common denominator at best. What I call one sub-genre, you might consider another. Who’s to say who’s right?

    As for relevance to DJ-ing, there really isn’t any. If I decide to use the genres sauna, summer night and freezer because I know what tracks I stuck in each genre, than that is fine. If you want to call your genres green, yellow and red and that works for YOU, then that is fine too. Don’t count on what other people labelled the tracks you use, you label them the way they make sense to you. As a DJ use the genre field to divide your tracks in groups that make sense to you and that work well for you.

    I would not worry too much. Think more “broad”, and just let your sense of taste guide you.

    @DJ Vintage – I’ve watched the videos. I understand that labeling tracks as one wants, is easier to put some order into your music library.

    @D-Jam
    I’m not worried and I think broad enough, so I wont keep labels to mess with I want to play/mix.

    My point being – knowledge is power. That’s a common truth for everything.

    I wont stick notes of the genre to the things I wanna play. I listen and enjoy pretty much any kind of music – ranging from indian to pop, metal, rock, house, cassical, chill, jazz, blues, funk and what not.

    I have my preferences (meaning what I listen regularly), and I’ll probably mix in that area, however, I like to experiment and to innovate, and sometimes if I feel like I need to add something in a mix, it’s good to know where is my best bet to find it. Usually you wont find crazy guitar solos in a trance track, nor you will find a high female vocals in a death metal song. Why not with different time signatures as well – 3/4, 2/2, 7/8, 5/8 etc. Some other musical theory stuff experimentation might be fun as well 🙂

    So yeah, knowledge is power 🙂

    There’s a good article at Wikipedia that gives you what you’re looking for.

    I have just finished reorganzing my entire library. I decided that i needed to make my own genre names that are derived from the original genre. It may not make sense to anyone else but i works well for me when i need to find a similar sounding beat but basslines are different etc. Dnb for example i have what i call Classic dnb, then i have the DnB that has dubstep sound synths i just simply call DUB drum & bass Not sure if this has anything to do with your question though…

    Music you love or music you hate
