Participant1. Can I DJ using a PA System only with my Ultrabook?
I mean, for parties and bars, is it possible to connect
my Ultrabook’s sound output directly
to my Headphones and PA System Monitors simultaneously?Sure its possible, all you need just an INPUT in your laptop
2. Which cables and adapters would I need to do that?
You need an RCA converter adapter thingie not sure what is it called, Radio Shack sell em, it basically a stereo cable with two females at the end of it, for your RCA cable
4. Do I really need PA Booth Monitors?
Not really, you right you can just mix it inside your headphone ( I called this Inside Mixing ) or if you use Serato you can just “Visually Mix” via your laptop screen
I really do hope you not trying to do this kind of setup in some professional events/gigs, it would make you looks un professional and amatuerish

KeymasterBasically you can do all the things you ask, but I doubt the sound quality will be any good.
Also in a very loud environment the output on the headphones through a splitter cable might be too low.
Using a 4 speaker PA with just a laptop is like trying to fit a 600hp V12 into a Mini, the car will break down even if you can fit the V12.
Sony’s sound output is known for easy interference so going with RCA to XLR converters you might get loads of hum and bad sound. So generally you CAN do all this, but honestly you SHOULD not do it.

ParticipantHello guys!
Thanks a lot for the answers!
It really helped me out clarifying things…I’m aiming smaller venues, like bars and maybe some friends parties
(I’m just starting out as a DJ)Isn’t there any soundcard upgrade or even an amplifier
or even another gadget that might enhance the sound quality?
I mean, I know is rough trying to do all that only from an Ultrabook…
The output is the thing I’m most worried about,
there’s no worse thing than bad sound quality for a party.Any advice, tip or link will be very welcome!
Thank you,

ModeratorWell, you CAN get a decent soundcard, but then again, why not spend 150$ more and give yourself the added comfort and features of a DJ controller, including a headphone connector and volume control and a mic input (should you want one).
I know you emphasised not to be looking for a DJ controller, but you asked for our honest opinion.
We are not saying buy new, but you can probably get a decent used controller for under 125 USD. All you’d need would be a USB cable to your laptop, a cable from the controller output to the PA (a mic with cable if you plan on using one), if the controller is not USB-powered you’d need a power adapter and that is is. Nice and tidy and stereo.
As for 4 PA speakers (assuming you have a good output – balanced preferably – going), it’s a set-up I prefer for rooms where I want to create a “dancefloor” area. Pointing the speakers inward and having 4 of them means you can play them a little less loud while still getting a more balanced sound level all over the dancefloor area with the added benefit of the sound being somewhat contained there, leaving space around the dancefloor where conversation is easier.
Booth speakers are handy, but a bonus and I would say forget those if you are going to stick with laptop only operation.
Hope that helps some.

KeymasterA decent sound card (which will also run off your USB and need a power adapter mostly) will cost you around 80 to 100 bucks.
A splitter cable, most likely a headphone amplifier and some small stuff you need then another 20-40 bucks.A decent dj controller, which can do more and has all of the above will run you 150 bucks and have good sound quality (e.g. Mixtrack Pro).
That is why that setup makes no sense.July 28, 2014 at 11:35 pm #2047109Carlos Andres
ParticipantHey guys!
Thanks for the advices!
And thanks for being honest 😀I’ll definitely buy a DJ Controller,
Actually is something I really wanna have…I just thought of that “simple” and rough
kind of setup and wanted some opinions
if that was in fact a good choice. And, after considering all that’s been said,
I’m gonna start looking for a decent controller. And I’ll aim for the 4 PA setup.
The low volume/good volume
tip was golden, DJ Vintage! (Y)Is there a website that ships worldwide for a good price? (besides ebay)
I’m from Brazil btw 😀Again, thank you!
