ParticipantI was wondering because my friends wanted to listen to me play some music. Since I had nothing to do, I played some progressive trance and some slow and relaxing trance. They didn’t mind the songs at first but then they were like “Why isn’t the songs upbeat and fast and make you wanna dance and stuff?”
Which made me wonder, apparently people associate DJ/ producers as “people who make songs that make you high” and not just plain “artists”.
But I guess I don’t mix around enough with true EDM music fans.

Maybe people think that if there is a DJ ‘Present’ then there has to be a ‘Party’;
A ‘Party’ being “Let’s Get Up & Dance”
But there is ‘So Much More’ to EDM than just Dancing; this is why I don’t like the Word/Phrase ‘EDM’ as it just seems to Encompass ‘Anything’ Electronic; because The Beauty Of Ambient Music is for it to be ‘Appreciated’; not to be ‘Danced To’; and of course we then come to the Subject of ‘EDM & Drugs’; an Association that is Hardly HelpfulAugust 4, 2011 at 12:50 am #5151John
ParticipantI think the problem is that a lot of people (especially in America) don’t really like what most DJs play. They just happen to like the fact that wherever there’s a DJ there is usually someone of the opposite/same sex that they can get close to. Taking drugs “loosens” them up to be more open and has a symbiotic relationship with the music. Some people take the drug part way to far wether it be Alcohol or anything else. These are the people getting on the news. You never see a news report about a 10,000 people going to a festival and everyone had a great time. That would be boring. This report is the best one I have ever seen about any Dance Music event done by the general media.

Even that one still has some focus on the few people that go to those events looking to get high. Thankfully the reporter throws in at the end that by and large it’s all about the music. Which is my mantra. No matter what people tell me. I have mothers tell me I’m corrupting the youth of america when it gets out that I DJ. I generally only do house parties and the occasional small show. But people are set in their ways and don’t want to listen to someone with an opinion that differs from there own. I love music, all kinds of music. If it wasn’t for the music I don’t know where I’d be today. I know it wouldn’t be where I am now and that would suck.

MemberThank You Bartboy 🙂
I Loved that News Report; but Funnily enough; the part I Liked the Most was the 2 people (maybe in their late 40’s) sitting down on Deck Chairs Enjoying the Show 🙂
I have seen News Reports from a Rolling Stones Concert where people were Killed or Seriously Enjoyed by Security;
But putting aside the Terrible Events of 2010 (which were Not the Fault of the People); I can’t think of One out of Thousands of ‘Dance/DJ Events’ where people have been Killed; so I Don’t see the Reason for the Police 🙁But Like You; Without Music; and the Abilty To Express Ourselves Emotionally Through Music; I don’t know Where I would be today Either;

ParticipantOn the flipside, when certain dance music does crossover into mainstream you also start seeing it being re-interpreted and refreshed too. It also forces the underground artists to withdraw and come back with something new again – as its only so far a subgenre like electro house can go before it comes stale anyway. The mainstream is also re-invigorated with new ideas and stop becoming stale.
So I think cross pollenating of genres can be good… just a thought.
