    I put “no”.

I only ask you this…what is “selling out to the top 40”?

What would you do if you blew up as a DJ, had loads of office workers, college kids, trendy MTV fans all coming out to see you, and then others in the “underground” call you a sellout…despite that you haven’t changed?

I went through the preview of his album (video attached)

Yes, there’s a lot of the typical big room fluffy easy-to-digest stuff many “underground” folk puke at…but I also listen to tunes like “Mansion”, “Iron”, and “School”…and see different things. He’s capable of making diverse music, but he, like Guetta, wanted to make a bigger impact than just die-hard clubbers.

I will NEVER fault any of these EDM artists/producers for looking to get more mainstream appeal. As far as I’m concerned, they didn’t mince words or lie or hide the idea that they wanted to get into mainstream pop America.

Yes, we can hate it because it’s not what we think is “innovative”…but let me ask you this. Do you seriously think most of those fans of Guetta and Harris will really give underground music a shot? Would they listen to dubstep that isn’t the Skrillex sound? Would they listen to tech house? Would they try some wild b-boy nu school breaks? Would they do any indie/nu disco sounds?

Or would they beg for popstars and “chick hop”?

I also put no, because I don’t really think he has sold out with the collabs he does, because from what I know of Calvin Harris, he has always been a Pop Influenced producer, His songs have always been in and out of the top 40 and he is just evolving along with the scene.

I only put in ‘no’ because Calvis Harris has always been cheesy, it’s just that Top 40 is now the cheese he’s always made.

I put “yes”, but bear with me here.
Some of his songs, likes “Feel So Close”, “We Found Love”, and “Let’s Go” have been playing on my local Top 40 stations for whats felt like years (probably more like months) under different names. For example, at my local stations “Lets Go” isn’t by Calvin Harris (feat Ne-Yo), it is BY Ne-Yo. So when 18 months came out and there were 4 or 5 tracks that I’ve already heard a million times, they were dead to me. Before the album, I had no idea those songs were by Calvin Harris
Now, he does have some really really good songs like Mansion and Iron that are actually pretty good and I enjoy, but most of what he makes seems to Top 40ish for me, just sounds all the same.

I would say no, although some collabs he has done certainly seem that way, there are other tracks on this album which definitely feel less like this EDM craze of late. I think this album shows that he is able to create a wide range of music, from stuff rhianna and tinie tempah can sing to but also more “original” tunes like Iron and Mansion as mentioned above.

I would say no. I am a Calvin Harris fan to the max, over the summer i listened to whole playthroughs of “Ready for the Weekend” daily. I think he’s just taking advantage of the spot he’s earned. While i do feel that “18 Months” has a different feel than “Ready for the Weekend”, it’s still calvin harris and that’s what’s impotant :).

I also voted no. Maybe its cause I have a hard time deciding when ANYONE sells out there sound. Bands/artists change their sounds the more they make music. If they kept with the same sound for their whole careers I bet a lot more artists would get thrown to the side out of boredom by their fans.

Plus as stated above, he does still have some really good tracks that arent top 40. And I ask what is wrong with top 40? It’s catchy and gets overplayed over its lifespan?

meh I have no issues with top 40 i guess is where my opinion is formed.

Some do it for love some do it for money and so many just do it for the love of money. I’ve always seen Calvin Harris as mainstream so I can’t say he sold out because he never bought in to anything else.
