ParticipantJust to let peeps who might have shied away last night, it was a good session last night – one attendee blogged a review here is a snippit:
“After tonights meet, Iām feeling pretty positive and glad to have met some cool new people who share a passion and are willing to share their experience in order that I can become a better musician/digital dj/controller-ist and eventually become an accomplished electronic performer.”
http://undergroundfreelancer.com/2012/02/21/madlabsuk-and-digital-dj-ing/My overview:
We started off with quick introductions about ourselves and what led us to be there. It seemed all were already established DJ’s, some having been in the game for decades, but wanted to change things up and see what they can achieve that goes beyond the two decks and a mixer approach, for which all accepted was a classic combo.
The discussion then moved on as to what people would like to cover, a brainstorming session:- audience engagement, which became quite passionate;
- tagging and organising files (tagscanner, beatunes and even itunes reared its head with its smart playlists);
- free software to get started;
- controllers people are using became a show and tell around the room, interesting how people were using their equipment and modifying their equipment with custom mappings;
- more topics on the list saved for next time.
Alas the two hours passed quickly and people were staying behind well after 9pm discussing set-ups.
Our remaining topics from the brainstorming, have formed the following agenda for the next event:
- Using Keys for Harmonic mixing – Haroon will do a mini-session on detecting keys and using the camelot wheel
- Mapping with Traktor / Virtual DJ / other –
- Share your favourite effects – all to participate and share favourite effects
- Overview of Madeon style cue-point juggling
I’m looking at dates for the next event in March.

ParticipantI found out about this too late…
I live in Stockport.I’m a trance DJ (also play drum’n’bass and Happyhardcore, but not regularly)
I use traktor pro 2 2.0.3 on my laptop, with an Allen and Heath Xone:4D
I also use a Novation Launchpad to trigger samples. in Ableton LiveI broadcast online Sundays 8-10pm GMT on http://www.radio4by4.com/trance and http://www.tranceformers.net
My 4D is a bit big for taking places.
I have an alternative using my Android tablet. (if the developer (hexler) of TouchOSC gets a version with custom layouts enabled)Using TouchOSC as it is, doesn’t allow me to properly map it to traktor.
If he does get it developed, then my launchpad, laptop and tablet will fit in my laptop bag, and I only need a portable usb soundcard, to headphone cue and send output to the PA system where I am.
I have recently finished producing my first track a 138bpm peak time uplifting trancer.
