Until a few years ago, I would have said get them (actually get the aluminium ones, if only to make me jealous LOL).

However, the landscape has changed a bit in recent years.

First, the HD25s are still around and probably will be forever. They are a very very good set of cans for studio, live sound, (post)production AND DJ-ing. There is no sound event I go to where not at least one person is carrying a pair. They are also highly popular with reporters and cameramen. Soundwise there is nothing to fault. They are lightweight and pretty indestructable. And if something does break (or more likely just wear out), EVERYTHING can be replaced (although not cheap replacements, a new cable is about 40-45 euro I think :-p ).

So getting a set of 25s is never a bad choice.

Here comes the big question though. What are you planning to do with them. If they are DJ-ing only, there might be alternatives more suitable. If (like me) you also do live sound and post production and/or studio work, it’s still the best all-round choice, imho.

For DJ only purposes, the Beats Mixr seems to be gathering a following, even my esteemed and highly experienced (and HD25 using) co-moderator Terry is using one I think. Another set to look at (although slightly more expensive) is the new Sennheiser HD-series. I’d forgo the HD6, but budgetwise the HD7 would fit. Especially if you are looking for over the ear with higher sound isolation, they are a good contender, imho.

    Hope that helps.

Make sure to try them out before buying. If you tend to leave the headphones on for longer durations, on the ear headphones may clamp to hard on your head. Also Audiotechnica M50x seem to be not that bad either. I can always recommend the Crossfade by V-Moda, but their semiopen design actually doesn´t isolate the best – but I´ve never tried a headphone that was more comfy than these. (which highly depends on my opinion – and I´m not even near to say that I tried out a big amount)

Vintage, if you´re jealous on the aluminium ones check out the Sennheiser Amperior. Basically the same (eventough more expensive for actually no reason), but they come in blue. Looking at these makes me weak … we´ll see, how christmas goes this year. 😀

Yes I have my Sennheiser HD 25s I dunno for how many years and they are excellent. Also I love the fact that each part of them is user replaceable. So you can prolong their life indefinitely.

Now I actually do not like the newer Sennheisers that much, they seem not so well vented and even in the store my ears got sweaty, which I can only imagine is worse in a big club with loads of people…

Now yes I am using the Beats Mixr at this time, but that is due to the fact that they fit my head (and they do not do so with every head hehe) and I do like their sound characteristics (aka I can hear any beat really well). Their sound is much like the HD 25s with a bit more low end.

Also I really love the Nocs NS 900. I consider them the worthy successor of any Sennheiser HD 25 and they are extremely comfy and their sound quality is amazingly similar to the beats. But the beats come in orange so it was an easy choice for me hehe.

I have that problem with just about every over-the-ear headphones really. Or, if they ventilate well, they always seem to isolate less. And when they isolate less, one of the reasons for switching from the 25s is gone 😀 .
