Of those two models, the 1000s will give you a much better feature set to work with. But if you have the budget to buy two of those and a mixer there are *many* far better investments you can make that will give you similar results and leave you with cash to spare.

Is there a reason you are opting for outdated technology (mainly the 850s and DJM) rather than a modern controller?

If you want to buy outdated obsolete equipment then save a little more and buy something even more expensive that will limit your creativity…

Honestly, rather than the 850s or 1000s and a DJM you would probably do better to look at something like the SX2 or SZ. Similar workflow, and a lot of advantages through extra features via the software. All of these units are high end or pro gear and feature the same levels of quality.

    …BUT…

And this is the key thing to consider – all of these would be WAY overboard for someone just starting out. If you’re just getting your feet wet in this whole DJ thing don’t do it by throwing around a bunch of cash — spend wisely and learn the craft first before you start getting into the pro gear. If you know what you’re doing, skills will easily translate between various types of gear. But if you don’t know what you’re doing no amount of money and expensive gear will help.

hi Vintage thanks for asking this, buying a controller will cost same when i add a mac pro or any other high end laptop. i have used numark pro2 for more than a year and dont want to be a controller guy anymore. after using controller it was first time i played on cdj2000s and i thought controller is nothing in front of the cdj. i dont get that feel of djing on a controller. Thank You.

hi Terry, i dont have any other option left, being honest, i am applying for a loan from bank for these. so new players and old mixers. prefering pioneer 4 chanel mixers coz of color effects mainly. if there are any other mixers which costs less than these and does the same job please advice me about it. Thank You.

hi Todd. I have been in this scene more than 3 years. I have used Numark pro2 for a long time. I took djing classes and its been 20 months now. i am pushing myself a step ahead by investing, More for practice at home and less for taking these out for gigs. other plan i have is i will give these for rent and i will get my money to pay the emi every month. Please advice if i am taking a wrong step. Thank YOu.

I honestly would never consider taking out a loan for DJing, it’s just too turbulent in terms of income… there are times where I’m playin’ multiple times a week, then there are stretches where I haven’t played in over a month.

Ah, gottcha – when you said “This is my first gear im going to buy” it made it sound like you were just starting out. Let’s adjust the line of questioning a tad then…

“Don’t want to be a controller guy anymore”
Can you elaborate on this a little? You didn’t like using software or you weren’t a fan of the controller you were using? I ask because if software is the problem then you are indeed limited in options, but be warned, you are also seriously limiting yourself on future options as well. If you are not a fan of the controllers, maybe you’ve reached the time to look at a better controller. An SX2 or SZ is going to cost you less than a CDJ/mixer combo, and has similar feel to the CDJ line and is RekordBox comatible. The new Denon unit announced today will cost WAY less than a CDJ/mixer combo and can also be used laptop free.

“Buying a controller will cost same when i add a mac pro or any other high end laptop”
What are you using now? If it’s working now it should get you through till you can upgrade – and not having to spend everything at once is always a good idea. I would never do general rent on my gear – rental gear gets beaten up and not treated well at all. It’s a sure path to making your fancy new gear old and broken in a hurry.

I’m not trying to talk you out of anything, but when you are looking at spending this kind of money you want to think it over very, very carefully.

My 2 cents: I believe if youre looking at getting a loan, then youve explored your options and like you admitted, its between the two. And so, the BEST advice, is play on them both, go to a place that sells them and test em out. Thats the only way to know which will be best for you.
And getting a loan is NOT a dumb idea. Who cares if there are months you dont work. The point of having GOOD at home equipment isnt to pass the time between shows, the point is to better yourself in the best way possible and become the type of DJ that will not have months off because theyve perfected their skills more.
DJ equipment, unless youre actually just a hobbyist, is an investment in your career future and such…
Its like school books. You may not be a doctor yet, and getting paid to do operations, but the book is needed to learn and become better. So get your “book” and get better, and one day that investment will bring a return that will have made the loan and the interest worth it.
Also, there are “credit” type businesses that give credit without interest. Like American Musical. I bought my Sx2 via American Musical. Much easier to pay monthly than drop the full amount. Even though i had the money, with no interest that allowed me to buy even more new things and such. So i’d look into that before looking into a bank loan. (and there are a few ‘no credit needed’ types of equipment purchase companies)

    Good luck!

todd im sorry i was not clear.
โ€œDonโ€™t want to be a controller guy anymoreโ€
i dont have any problem with software and controllers they are amazing thing to work on. i also think that a controller is a producer’s toy not a dj’s. i personally do not like feel of standing in front of million buttons and a small gear comparatively. that classic feel of doing it on players is something which i like. i know i am limiting myself for future options but im sure i will find another way to upgrade . i used my friends laptop dont have my own. however depending on your opinion i am thinking about controller once again.

Hello DB. i have limited options here, there are no retails which display and i have no idea of where i will get these gear to test. so its a one shot for me. mostly i depend on reviews online.

i will look for that type of credit company here. your words are inspiring ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks.

No need to apologize – you aren’t the first person I’ve misunderstood and you certainly won’t be the last! Happens all the time. ๐Ÿ™‚

One more wrinkle to add to your thought process on this – if you are seriously looking at renting them out as a source of income, you pretty much need to be looking at 2000s. The reason is simple – that’s what would be on the tech riders of travelling DJs looking to rent out decks. If you’re looking to rent, you’re going to rent the best – not the lower models. So on top of my previous caution about renting out your gear, if you do settle on one of the models you are looking at, you may find there isn’t much of a rental market for them.

Now, with all of that being said, I still stick with what I said originally – XDJ 1000 over the CDJ 850. Better features – more future proof so your investment will last longer. It’s still not really a route I would recommend (I disagree strongly with you that controllers are toys for producers only), but based on what you’re looking at that would be your better investment.

    Good luck!

Honestly most rental companies in my areas sold their CDJ gear as nobody wants it anymore. Most pro DJs (and I do not mean endorsement contract high sellers, but professional working mobile and clubbing DJs with a reasonable income) have their controllers now. So most rental companies switch to PA and stage mixer rentals and bring your own controller.
Except one high profile one (that I use mostly) they now have 2 DDJ-SZ controllers they rent out.

If it is a size thing I totally understand, standing in the 6 meter booth of the Octagon my controller (Terminal Mix) felt a little small, but if you go towards the full size options (DDJ-SZ, DDJ-RZ, NS7 III, MCX8000) you have the size of CDJ systems but are not limited to the functions and can still use full Serato and are still WAY cheaper than a Nexus setup.
Even a DDJ-SX is not that small anymore and way bigger than the mixtrack pro you have and looks way more professional (and is).

Some other DJs (myself included) fill up with additional gear, so second time around I filled the booth not only with my controller but for live performance I added a reloop Neon, second laptop and NI Maschine, 2 midi fighters and a faderfox… you get the idea. (Actually van Dyke uses a similar setup)

So when you get a loan for something it means you will have to work for it afterwards, in my opinion then you should invest in gear that will hold up to the tests of the future and not invest in obsolete gear that in 2 years time nobody will even want used anymore.
